1 Timothy – Instructions for God’s Household

1 Timothy is a pastoral letter from the apostle Paul to his protégé Timothy, whom he left in Ephesus to confront false teachers and strengthen the church’s leadership and conduct. Paul emphasizes that sound doctrine and godly living are inseparable, urging Timothy to guard the gospel, correct distorted teachings, and model integrity. The letter provides practical instruction on worship, prayer, qualifications for elders and deacons, care for widows, treatment of various groups within the church, and the dangers of greed and speculative teaching. Throughout, Paul encourages Timothy to persevere, “fight the good fight,” and faithfully shepherd God’s household—the church, which he calls the pillar and foundation of the truth.
