He Who Loves Jesus

Author: Stephen Weller

Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. (John 14:21 ESV)

“Whoever” is anyone who knows his commandments (his word) and keeps them (or abides in them) is counted as one of the disciples of Jesus and will know the truth and the truth will set then free (John 8:31 – 32). The Pharisees had the commandments from Moses and knew them, and they heard Jesus teach, but in both cases, they refused to keep them. How many of my readers know passages from the Bible but don’t live them out in daily life? How well we keep or abide in these commandments (or now in our case the word of God) indicates our love for Jesus (John 14:15) and thus our love for God.

Abiding in his word indicates our love for Jesus and insures our Father’s love for us as indicated by John 16:27 ESV: “for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.” It is true that the Father loves the world (its people) so much that he sacrificed his Son for us, but through faith in Jesus we become his children and are loved deeply by the father. Jesus was the sacrifice that purchased our salvation and thus it is our love for him that draws a special love from the Father for us.

Abiding in his word is to be driven out of love for him and puts us in a position to be loved by him in return because we are one of his through salvation. Each one of us who is born spiritually is given to Jesus by the Father as a gift of great value and is thus loved by him with an everlasting love.

Not only will Jesus love us, but he will manifest himself to us. To manifest is to make evident; we become more aware of who he is. Consider 2 Corinthians 4:8 – 11 ESV: 8 “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.”

As we live through the trials of life, they provide opportunity for others to see Jesus being lived out through our lives. In this way he is being manifested in our bodies. Our lives are to be a living sacrifice for Jesus’ sake and in that way the life of Jesus is manifested (or revealed) in us. The sacrifice of Jesus is seen in our sacrifice in living for him and thus through us he is manifested to others.

Father, I pray that my sacrifice in serving Jesus is worthy of your love for me. I pray that I am able to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which I have been called (Ephesians 4:1).

Loving Christ Through Obedience Brings Deeper Fellowship with Him

Summary Paragraph

In John 14:21, Jesus teaches that genuine love for Him is demonstrated through obedience to His commands. Love for Christ is not merely expressed through words or emotions but through a life that responds to His teachings with faithful action. Jesus promises that those who love Him in this way will be loved by the Father, and He Himself will love them and reveal Himself to them. This promise speaks of a deeper experiential relationship with Christ—one in which His presence, character, and truth become increasingly clear to the obedient believer. The verse highlights the inseparable connection between love, obedience, and divine fellowship.

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers

1. According to John 14:21, how is genuine love for Jesus demonstrated?
Answer:
Jesus states that the one who has His commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Him. This means that true love for Christ is not simply verbal or emotional, it is expressed through obedience. Throughout Scripture, obedience is the outward evidence of inward devotion. A believer who loves Jesus desires to follow His teachings, align their life with His will, and honor Him in their actions. Obedience does not earn salvation, but it reflects a transformed heart that values Christ above all else. In this way, obedience becomes the practical expression of love.

2. What promise does Jesus give to those who love Him and keep His commandments?
Answer:
Jesus promises three things: they will be loved by the Father, He Himself will love them, and He will reveal Himself to them. While God already loves believers, Jesus is describing a deeper experience of that love in the life of the obedient follower. As believers walk in obedience, they experience a growing awareness of God’s presence, guidance, and character. Christ “manifesting Himself” means that He makes His truth, peace, and direction increasingly evident. This is the difference between simply knowing about Christ and experiencing a living relationship with Him.

3. What does it mean that Jesus will “manifest” or reveal Himself to the believer?
Answer:
The word “manifest” means to make something clearly known or visible. Jesus is speaking of a spiritual revelation rather than a physical appearance. As believers walk in obedience and love, Christ becomes more real to them through the work of the Holy Spirit, through Scripture, and through the transformation of their lives. They gain deeper understanding of His character, greater assurance of His presence, and clearer insight into His will. This ongoing revelation strengthens faith and deepens intimacy with Him.

4. Why is obedience closely connected to a deeper relationship with Christ?
Answer:
Obedience positions the believer to walk in harmony with God’s will. When a person obeys Christ’s commands, they are aligning their life with God’s truth and purpose. This alignment removes barriers created by sin and self-will, allowing the believer to experience greater spiritual clarity and fellowship with Christ. Just as trust and faithfulness strengthen human relationships, obedience strengthens the believer’s relationship with Jesus. It opens the door to deeper understanding, guidance, and spiritual growth.

5. How can believers apply the message of John 14:21 in their daily lives?
Answer:
Believers apply this verse by intentionally seeking to understand and follow Christ’s teachings. This involves studying Scripture, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide decisions, and responding to God’s direction with faithful action. Everyday obedience may involve loving others sacrificially, choosing truth over compromise, practicing forgiveness, or faithfully serving where God places us. As believers consistently choose obedience out of love for Christ, they experience the promise of this verse, greater awareness of God’s love and a deeper personal relationship with Jesus.
