The Blessing of Unity, Worship, Sovereignty, and Steadfast Love
This title reflects the beautiful upward progression across the four psalms:
- Psalm 133 — The blessing of unity among God’s people, rich and refreshing.
- Psalm 134 — The call to worship, lifting hands in the sanctuary and receiving God’s blessing.
- Psalm 135 — Praise for God’s sovereignty, His mighty acts, and His supremacy over all idols.
- Psalm 136 — A sweeping declaration of God’s steadfast love, repeated in every verse as the foundation of His works.
Together, they form a single movement: God gathers His people in unity, invites them to worship, reveals His power, and surrounds everything with His enduring love.
Psalm 133 – The Beauty of Unity
Overview
Psalm 133 is one of the Songs of Ascents, celebrating the joy and blessing of God’s people living together in unity. David compares unity to the precious anointing oil poured upon Aaron, symbolizing God’s consecration and blessing, and to the refreshing dew of Mount Hermon descending upon Zion, illustrating life, renewal, and divine favor. The psalm teaches that genuine unity among God’s people is both beautiful and spiritually life-giving because it reflects God’s own character. Where believers live in harmony, God delights to bestow His blessing, including the promise of life forevermore.
Theological Themes
- Unity among God’s people reflects God’s character.
- God’s blessings accompany spiritual harmony.
- Fellowship strengthens worship and witness.
- Eternal life is associated with God’s covenant blessing.
Key Verse
Psalm 133:1 – “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Discussion Questions with Answers
1. Why is unity described as both good and pleasant?
Answer: Unity is good because it fulfills God’s design for His people and promotes peace, love, and mutual encouragement. It is pleasant because harmonious relationships bring joy and strengthen communities. Christian unity also provides a powerful testimony to the world of God’s transforming grace.
2. Why does David compare unity to Aaron’s anointing oil?
Answer: Aaron’s anointing represented God’s consecration of the priesthood for holy service. Just as the fragrant oil flowed abundantly over Aaron, unity spreads blessing throughout God’s people. It signifies that harmonious fellowship is sacred and empowered by God’s Spirit.
3. What does the dew of Hermon symbolize?
Answer: Dew represents refreshment, life, and fruitfulness. Just as dew nourishes dry land, unity refreshes the spiritual life of God’s people. Where believers love and support one another, spiritual growth flourishes, and God commands His blessing.
Psalm 134 – Blessing the Lord
Overview
Psalm 134 concludes the Songs of Ascents by calling the priests who ministered during the night in the temple to continually bless the Lord. The worshipers departing Jerusalem encourage God’s servants to continue faithful worship, while the priests respond by pronouncing God’s blessing upon His people. The psalm beautifully illustrates that worship includes both praising God and receiving His gracious blessing.
Theological Themes
- Worship is continual.
- God’s servants faithfully minister before Him.
- Blessing flows both to God in praise and from God to His people.
- The Creator alone is the source of true blessing.
Key Verse
Psalm 134:2 – “Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.”
Discussion Questions with Answers
1. Why were the priests called to bless the Lord during the night?
Answer: Temple worship continued beyond daylight hours. Their continual service symbolized that God’s praise never ceases. Likewise, believers today are called to worship God continually regardless of circumstance.
2. What does lifting up the hands symbolize?
Answer: Raised hands express surrender, dependence, gratitude, prayer, and joyful worship. It is an outward expression of an inward heart devoted to God.
3. What blessing concludes the psalm?
Answer: The priests pronounce God’s blessing from Zion, reminding worshipers that the Creator of heaven and earth is the source of every good gift. Those who worship Him leave under His divine favor.
Psalm 135 – Praise the Lord for His Greatness
Overview
Psalm 135 is a majestic hymn praising God’s greatness, sovereignty, and mighty acts throughout Israel’s history. The psalm recounts God’s election of Israel, His power over creation, His judgment against Egypt, His victories over powerful kings, and His faithfulness in giving Israel the Promised Land. In contrast to lifeless idols fashioned by human hands, the Lord alone is the living God worthy of worship. The psalm calls all God’s servants and His entire covenant people to praise Him.
Theological Themes
- God’s absolute sovereignty.
- God’s faithfulness to His covenant.
- The futility of idolatry.
- Praise belongs exclusively to the living God.
Key Verse
Psalm 135:5 – “For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.”
Discussion Questions with Answers
1. How does this psalm demonstrate God’s greatness?
Answer: God’s greatness is revealed through His control over creation, His miraculous deliverance of Israel, His victories over mighty nations, and His ongoing faithfulness to His covenant promises.
2. Why are idols contrasted with the Lord?
Answer: Idols possess eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot hear, and mouths but cannot speak. They are powerless because they are human creations. The Lord, however, is the living Creator who actively rules history and hears the prayers of His people.
3. What practical lesson does this teach believers today?
Answer: Believers should reject anything that competes with God for their trust and devotion. True security, hope, and salvation are found only in the Lord, not in wealth, possessions, achievements, or human power.
