I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life. (Psalm 119:93 ESV)
What are the precepts that we should never forget? For those who might be reading this in which English is your second language, the synonyms of precepts are principles, teachings, rules, guidelines and instruction. These precepts are portions of Scripture that when applied to life being lived will result in holy righteous living. But to properly understand these Scriptures, one needs to be spiritually alive and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. For if we are spiritually dead, having not obtained salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, then many things in the Scriptures will appear as foolishness.
Some of those precepts, in the form of verses, from which we are led to eternal life are as follows:
John 2:16 ESV: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Romans 8:32 ESV: “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” One of those gifts is eternal life.
Romans 6:23 ESV: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Please follow this link to see a diagram of this verse.
Ephesians 2:8 – 10 ESV: 8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Verses 8 and 9 guide us to the gift of eternal life, but once we are a child of God, verse 10 then clearly points out our responsibility.
God sent his Son to earth, who took on flesh through a virgin birth, lived a perfect life and died on the cross as a perfect sacrifice in our place, taking upon himself our sin and in exchange clothing us with his righteousness, allowing us to stand before God, cleared of all charges against us by the law. 9 “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved” (Romans 10:9 – 10).
Father, I pray that these precepts would lead someone to find life in Jesus Christ.

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:
- What does the psalmist mean by saying he will “never forget” God’s precepts?
Answer:
To “never forget” God’s precepts goes beyond mere memory; it signifies a deliberate and continual commitment to hold God’s Word at the center of one’s life. The psalmist is expressing a resolve to treasure, meditate on, and obey God’s commands. Forgetting in Scripture often implies neglect or disobedience, so remembering involves active engagement, reading, reflecting, and applying God’s truth daily. This kind of remembrance shapes decisions, attitudes, and actions, anchoring the believer in truth even amid trials. - In what sense does God’s Word “give life” according to this verse?
Answer:
God’s Word gives life in both a sustaining and reviving sense. Spiritually, it awakens the heart to God, bringing understanding, conviction, and renewal. It sustains life by providing wisdom, comfort, and direction, especially in times of difficulty. The psalmist likely refers to moments when he was near despair or spiritual decline, yet God’s precepts restored him. This life is not merely physical but deeply spiritual, strengthening faith, restoring joy, and aligning the believer with God’s purposes. - How does remembering God’s Word help preserve a believer’s spiritual life?
Answer:
Remembering God’s Word guards the believer against sin, discouragement, and spiritual drift. When Scripture is internalized, it becomes a constant source of truth that counters lies, temptation, and fear. It provides clarity in confusion and hope in suffering. By recalling God’s promises and commands, believers are reminded of God’s faithfulness and their identity in Him. This preservation is an ongoing work of God through His Word, keeping the believer grounded and steadfast. - What practical steps can believers take to ensure they do not forget God’s precepts?
Answer:
Believers can cultivate remembrance through regular reading of Scripture, meditation, memorization, and prayerful reflection. Writing down verses, discussing them with others, and applying them in daily situations reinforces retention. Consistent exposure to God’s Word builds a reservoir of truth in the heart. Additionally, obedience plays a key role; living out God’s commands deepens their impact and makes them unforgettable. Establishing habits and routines centered on Scripture helps ensure that God’s Word remains active and influential in life. - Why is it important to view God’s Word as essential to life rather than optional?
Answer:
Viewing God’s Word as essential recognizes its role as the foundation for spiritual health and growth. Just as physical life depends on nourishment, spiritual life depends on the truth and guidance found in Scripture. When believers treat God’s Word as optional, they risk spiritual कमजଳ, confusion, and vulnerability to worldly influences. The psalmist’s declaration shows that true life, fullness, strength, and endurance, comes through a deep and abiding relationship with God’s Word. Recognizing its necessity leads to greater dependence on God and a more vibrant, faithful walk with Him.
