There Is No One Like God!

Author: Stephen Weller
937 words, 5 minutes read time

Therefore, you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. (2 Samuel 7:22 ESV)

We find our verse in a section of Scripture that is titled, “David’s Prayer of Gratitude” in the ESV Study Bible. The verse begins with “Therefore” which should prompt us to look and see what it is referring to. In the previous verses, we find David offering up praise for all that God has done for him and his promise made to David. All the greatness that David has experienced, he attributes to God.

Because of all of this, David declares that God is great, for there is none like him. “For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods” (1 Chronicles 16:25 ESV). “Our God is greater than all gods” (2 Chronicles 2:5 ESV). Have you come to experience in your relationship with God that there is none like him?

Let us join David and rejoice in our God with the following verses: Exodus 15:11 ESV: “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?”; Deuteronomy 3:24 ESV: “O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours?”; Psalm 89:8 ESV: “O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?”; Isaiah 45:5 ESV: “I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me.”; and Jeremiah 10:6 ESV: “There is none like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is great in might.”

David says that there “is no God besides you” and he says that based on all that has been heard with our ears. How well are we listening to God to establish in us the belief that there is no God besides the one described in the Bible? Father, as the world increases its propaganda, encourage us to listen more carefully.

The incomparability of God and the uniqueness of His covenant relationship with His people

Summary Paragraph

In 2 Samuel 7:22, David responds to God’s covenant promise with worship, declaring that there is no one like the Lord and no God besides Him. This verse reflects David’s deep recognition of God’s unmatched greatness, sovereignty, and faithfulness, especially in light of all that God has revealed and done for Israel. David acknowledges that God’s actions in history, delivering, choosing, and establishing His people, demonstrate His uniqueness among all so-called gods. The verse emphasizes that true knowledge of God comes through His revealed word and mighty works, leading to humble worship and reverence.

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:

  1. What does David mean when he says there is “no one like” the Lord?
    Answer:
David is affirming the absolute uniqueness and incomparability of God. Unlike the false gods of surrounding nations, the Lord is living, active, sovereign, and faithful. His character, holy, just, merciful, and unchanging, sets Him apart completely. This statement is not just theological but experiential; David has seen God’s power in delivering Israel and in his own life. It reminds believers that God cannot be compared to anything in creation, and therefore He alone is worthy of worship and trust.
  2. How does “all that we have heard with our ears” contribute to David’s understanding of God?
    Answer:
This phrase refers to the testimony of God’s works passed down through generations, His covenant with Abraham, the Exodus from Egypt, the giving of the Law, and His continual guidance of Israel. David’s faith is grounded not only in personal experience but also in the historical revelation of God. This highlights the importance of Scripture and shared testimony in shaping a proper understanding of who God is. For believers today, it underscores the value of studying God’s Word and remembering His past faithfulness as a foundation for present trust.
  3. Why is it significant that David connects God’s uniqueness to His relationship with Israel?
    Answer:
David recognizes that God’s uniqueness is not only seen in His power but also in His personal involvement with His people. God chose Israel, redeemed them, and made them His own, setting them apart from all other nations. This covenant relationship reveals God’s grace and purpose. It shows that the true God is not distant but relational, actively working in the lives of His people. For believers, this points forward to the greater covenant fulfilled in Christ, where God’s uniqueness is revealed through His redemptive love and personal relationship with those who trust in Him.
  4. How should recognizing God’s uniqueness affect a believer’s life today?
    Answer:
Understanding that there is no one like God should lead to exclusive devotion, worship, and trust in Him alone. It challenges believers to reject modern “idols” such as wealth, status, or self-reliance, and instead place full confidence in God’s character and promises. It also encourages humility, as we recognize that everything we have comes from Him. Ultimately, this recognition should deepen worship, strengthen faith, and inspire obedience, as we respond to God not just as powerful, but as uniquely worthy of our lives.
