The Heart of Man Plans His Way
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 ESV)
This verse has two parts: man – he plans; Lord – he establishes. God created man with free will, but he is sovereign. “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21 ESV). God has a purpose and as man makes plans, he directs man towards his purpose by establishing his steps. The plans of the Lord will stand and if need be, 10 “The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations” (Psalm 33:10 – 11 ESV).
Because of our sin nature, God reminds us “that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps” (Jeremiah 10:23 ESV). It is possible that our plans could lead us to disaster: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (Proverbs 14:12 ESV). Unless we seek guidance from God there will be a good chance he will cause or allow interference along the way to alter those plans.
How can we make better plans? “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way” (Psalm 37:23 ESV). When we understand the purpose of God and delight in his ways, then our plans will synchronize with his steps for us. There are times when it is difficult to understand his ways (Proverbs 20:24) but they are best.
Prayer and study must be part of making plans by believers if we are to do the work that God as planned for us to do. May I remind you once again: 8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8 – 10 ESV). It is easy to overlook verse 10, but as a new creation in Jesus Christ, we have a work assignment and it is God’s purpose that we complete that work before our death and if our plans do not include that work, then we can expect some interference with our plans.
Father, I wonder how many trials we experience in life because we haven’t included you in our plans or we are resisting doing the assigned work. It was not your plan that we obtain salvation and then enjoy comfort, safety and the pleasures of the world as we neglect our responsibilities before you.

God’s Sovereign Direction Over Human Plan
Summary Paragraph
Book of Proverbs 16:9 teaches that while human beings thoughtfully plan their paths, it is ultimately the Lord who establishes their steps. This verse highlights the balance between human responsibility and divine sovereignty: people are called to think, plan, and act wisely, yet they must recognize that God governs outcomes. It underscores the truth that God’s purposes prevail over human intentions, guiding lives according to His will, often in ways unseen or unexpected.
Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:
- What does it mean that “the heart of man plans his way”?
Answer: This phrase affirms that God has given humans the ability to think, make decisions, and plan for the future. It reflects intentionality, responsibility, and wisdom in action. Scripture consistently encourages wise planning (see Proverbs 21:5), indicating that planning itself is not only acceptable but commendable. However, this planning must be done with humility, acknowledging that human understanding is limited. - How does the Lord “establish his steps”?
Answer: God establishes a person’s steps by directing outcomes, opening and closing doors, and guiding circumstances according to His sovereign will. This may involve redirecting plans, delaying expectations, or leading in ways that differ from human intentions. God’s guidance can be seen through His Word, providential circumstances, and sometimes through counsel or conviction. Ultimately, He ensures that His purposes are fulfilled in and through a person’s life. - How should this verse shape our approach to planning?
Answer: This verse calls for a balance of diligence and dependence. Believers should plan carefully and responsibly while remaining submitted to God’s will. This includes seeking His guidance through prayer, aligning plans with biblical principles, and maintaining flexibility when circumstances change. It encourages a posture of trust, recognizing that God’s direction is better than even the best human plans. - What is the danger of making plans without acknowledging God?
Answer: Planning without God can lead to pride, self-reliance, and ultimately frustration or failure. It assumes control over the future, which belongs to God alone. Such an approach ignores God’s wisdom and can result in pursuing paths that are not aligned with His will. Book of James 4:13–15 warns against this mindset, urging believers to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” - How does this verse encourage trust during unexpected changes in life?
Answer: When plans do not unfold as expected, this verse provides reassurance that God is still in control. It reminds believers that even disruptions and detours are under His authority and serve His greater purpose. Trusting that God establishes each step allows believers to rest in His wisdom and goodness, even when circumstances are unclear or difficult. - How does Proverbs 16:9 relate to the broader theme of God’s sovereignty in Scripture?
Answer: This verse aligns with the consistent biblical teaching that God governs all things according to His will. From the stories of Joseph (Genesis 50:20) to the mission of Paul (Acts 16:6–10), Scripture shows that God directs events and decisions for His purposes. Proverbs 16:9 encapsulates this truth in a concise statement, reminding believers that God’s sovereign hand is always at work, guiding human lives toward His ordained ends.
