Judgment Against the Disobedient
Scripture: Luke 19:24-28
In the previous lesson we considered the servant that did not invest his mina. We ended that lesson with some questions about the kind of servant we are. In this lesson we will look at what happened to the disobedient servant.
Lk 19:24 “And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’”
Instruction was given to take the mina from the disobedient servant and give it to the one who was most successful in his use of his mina. They asked, “Why give it to the one who has the most? Because he was successful in his use of the original one mina and would be the most likely to accomplish even more from this extra one.
God has given to me resources, talents, and opportunities and instructed me to use them is doing good works (Ephesians 2:10). One day I will be called to come before Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:12 – 15) to give an account of how well I did with what God gave me. It appears that if I did well, God will give me even more to use in heaven, but if I did not do so well, then I can expect loss with less opportunity in heaven. Even in this life this has proven true. Nearly 70 years ago I began to invest my life in God’s word, which opened the door to teach life groups, to teach Bible in China for a number of years, and to develop a Christian website and begin to populate it with Bible studies which are shared through various social media channels. What have you done and are doing with what God has invested in you?
Lk 19:26 “I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
To the one who has produced results from what God has given will be given more responsibility and more resources, which is proving true in my life, but the one who becomes friends with the world and does not invest what God has given them, resource will be taken from that one along with future opportunity. The good works that are done using God’s given resource will be rewarded, but the things done for self will be destroyed and that one will suffer future loss.
Lk 19:27 “But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.”
This verse looks to the future and forecasts the final judgment of those who reject Jesus. In addition to dying physically, which we all will, they will suffer eternal death in hell apart from God and his benefits.
Lk 19:28 “And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.”
Jesus continues his journey towards Jerusalem.
Conclusion
This parable should produce fear in the lives of those who are investing their God given resources in the comforts, pleasures and things of the world and not in kingdom good works. That which we invest in the world for self will be burned up at our evaluation as we in shame suffer loss. Those who faithfully invest their mina will be rewarded with more and even greater opportunities in heaven. What opportunity has God placed before you?
