God’s Faithful Hand in Restoration and Renewal

Ezra 5-7 highlights the renewed work on the temple, God’s providential favor, and Ezra’s mission to restore spiritual faithfulness.

Section 1: Ezra 5:1–17 – The Temple Work Resumes

Overview:
After years of delay, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah stir the people of Judah to resume rebuilding the temple. Zerubbabel and Jeshua lead the effort, encouraged by God’s Word. Regional officials question their authority, but instead of stopping the work, they allow it to continue while sending a report to King Darius for verification. The elders of the Jews continue building, sustained by the watchful care of God. This section highlights the power of prophetic encouragement and God’s sovereign protection over His work.

He not only reaffirms it but commands that the work be fully supported with royal funds. He warns that anyone who interferes will face severe punishment. God uses a pagan king to provide resources and protection, demonstrating His sovereignty over all rulers and nations.

Section 3: Ezra 6:13–22 – The Temple Completed and Dedicated

Overview:
With the king’s support, the temple is completed, fulfilling God’s Word through the prophets. The people celebrate with joy, offering sacrifices and dedicating the house of God. They reestablish the priesthood and observe the Passover, remembering God’s deliverance. The Lord fills them with joy, turning the heart of the king toward them. This moment marks both physical restoration and renewed worship.

• God’s faithfulness to fulfill His Word.

Section 4: Ezra 7:1–10 – Ezra the Scribe

Overview:
Ezra is introduced as a skilled scribe and priest, a descendant of Aaron, devoted to studying, practicing, and teaching the Law of the Lord. God’s gracious hand is upon him, granting him favor with the king. Ezra’s heart is fully committed to God’s Word, making him a key leader in the spiritual restoration of Israel. His life models the proper relationship to Scripture: study, obedience, and instruction.

• God’s favor upon those who seek Him.

Section 5: Ezra 7:11–28 – Artaxerxes’ Decree and Ezra’s Mission

Overview:
King Artaxerxes issues a decree granting Ezra authority to return to Jerusalem, bring offerings, appoint leaders, and teach God’s Law. The king provides resources and exempts temple workers from taxes. Ezra recognizes that this favor comes from God’s hand and responds with praise. Strengthened by God, he gathers leaders and prepares to lead a group back to Jerusalem to continue the work of restoration.
