I Am the Lord Your God
Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go. (Isaiah 48:17 ESV)
As I look at this verse and think about what to write, I am reminded of the danger of isolating a verse from its context and then drawing an application for ourselves. Sometimes when we do that, the verse we are using doesn’t even apply to us but to a specific people at a specific time in history.
This verse in Isaiah applies to the people of Israel at a particular time of struggle. God is speaking to them through the prophet Isaiah about the cost of resisting God’s word and the blessing of true listening and obedience. In this case the general principles being taught can be applied to us.
The Lord, the “Holy One of Israel” is the Lord their God by his choice. The Lord chose to reveal himself to this people group and established himself to be their redeemer; to rescue them from bondage. The Lord is making it very clear in this verse that he has chosen them and will teach them to profit and will lead them in the way they should go. In verse 18 we are told that they didn’t listen and as a result didn’t profit as they should have.
In like manner, we are a people chosen by God for salvation and God sent his Son in the person of Jesus to become our perfect sacrifice and die on the cross in our place as our Redeemer. While on earth, Jesus laid out the gospel and then sacrificed his life to validate it. To us Jesus declares himself to be our redeemer and those of us who are in Christ have a responsibility to learn of his teaching and walk in obedience with him. Through redemption in Jesus Christ, we are children of God and through his discipline he will teach us the way we should go and even order our steps, sometimes through great trials, to mold us into the image of Jesus.
In verse 18, God said, “Oh that you had paid attention to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.” Are you paying attention to his word and experiencing peace and righteousness or are you spending your time in the world? Father how willing we are to accept what the world has to offer and thus forsaking the rich blessing of what you have for us.

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:
- What does it mean that God is both “Redeemer” and “Teacher” in this verse?
Answer:
God as Redeemer points to His role in rescuing His people from sin, bondage, and the consequences of their rebellion. As the Holy One of Israel, He is set apart in purity and authority, making His redemption both powerful and righteous. At the same time, He is a Teacher who instructs His people in truth and wisdom. This dual role shows that God not only saves but also transforms. Redemption is not merely deliverance from something but also guidance into a new way of living. God’s teaching shapes the redeemed life, helping believers grow in obedience, understanding, and alignment with His will. - How does God’s teaching differ from human understanding of what is “profitable” or beneficial?
Answer:
Human understanding of what is beneficial is often short-term, self-centered, and influenced by limited perspective. People tend to define profit in terms of comfort, success, or immediate gain. In contrast, God’s teaching is rooted in eternal truth and perfect wisdom. What He defines as profitable leads to spiritual growth, righteousness, and lasting peace. His instruction may sometimes call for sacrifice, discipline, or patience, which may not seem beneficial in the moment. However, His guidance always leads to what is ultimately good for the soul and aligned with His purposes. - What does it mean for God to “lead you in the way you should go”?
Answer:
This phrase conveys the idea of God actively directing the path of His people. It is not merely about giving instructions but about personal guidance and involvement in the believer’s life. God leads through His Word, His Spirit, and His providential circumstances. The “way” refers to a lifestyle of obedience, faith, and trust in Him. It is a path that aligns with His character and purposes. Following this way requires humility and a willingness to submit to His direction, trusting that He knows what is best even when the path is not fully understood. - Why is it significant that God continues to teach and lead even when His people have been disobedient?
Answer:
This highlights God’s grace, patience, and covenant faithfulness. Israel had repeatedly resisted God’s instruction, yet He did not abandon them. Instead, He continued to call them back, offering guidance and restoration. This demonstrates that God’s commitment to His people is not based on their perfection but on His character. For believers today, it is a powerful reminder that failure does not disqualify them from God’s guidance. He remains willing to teach and lead those who turn back to Him, providing hope and assurance of His ongoing work in their lives. - How can believers today respond to God’s role as Teacher and Leader in their lives?
Answer:
Believers respond by cultivating a posture of humility, obedience, and attentiveness. This includes regularly engaging with Scripture, seeking to understand and apply God’s Word, and being sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Prayer plays a key role in asking for wisdom and direction. Additionally, believers must be willing to trust God’s guidance even when it challenges their own desires or understanding. Obedience to God’s teaching leads to spiritual maturity and a life that reflects His purposes. Ultimately, responding to God as Teacher and Leader means surrendering control and walking by faith in His perfect guidance.
