This verse is found at the end of a section where John the Baptist is exalting Jesus Christ. John describes Jesus as the Son who came from heaven and is above all. He was sent by his Father with a message for us and a mission to accomplish; a mission that would require his death on the cross to finish his assigned work. That work was to purchase our salvation and his death was to satisfy the law by paying our debt. That purchase entitles him, and only him, to give the gift of salvation to those who come to him in faith, ⁸ “For by grace you have been saved through faith.
