God Will Show Us the Way

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. (Psalms 32:8 ESV)

This Psalm begins with “Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit” (verses 1 – 2). The one who believes and is born spiritually is the one who is blessed. This is the one with whom God works with in providing instruction and teaching us in the way we should go. As we plan our way, God has his way of establishing our steps (Proverbs 16:9) to guide us to the place he wants us to be.

We see God’s influence in our lives in guiding us to what he wants us to be in Romans 8:28 – 30 ESV: 28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” God has a final outcome for each of us and he uses all things to fulfill his purpose in us by conforming us to the image of his Son.

God carefully watches over us and counsels us when needed. With that counsel he will guide us and when he is finished, he will receive us into his glory (Psalm 73:24). That final outcome and that glory is seen in 1 John 3:2 ESV: “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

It is clear that God loves us and wants the best for us, but that will require a loving obedient response from us. The kindness of God’s grace is so wonderful and so much more that the world has to offer. How desperately we need to walk in a close loving relationship with the Lord and experience his blessing in our lives.

Summary Theme

God lovingly guides His people with wisdom, instruction, and personal care, leading them along the right path as they trust in Him.

Summary Paragraph

Psalm 32:8 is a powerful promise of God’s personal guidance and concern for His people. After David experienced the burden of hidden sin and the freedom of forgiveness, he declared that God does not abandon those who seek Him. Instead, God promises to instruct, teach, and counsel His people in the way they should go. The verse reveals that God’s guidance is not distant or impersonal; He watches over His children and directs them with loving wisdom. Believers are encouraged to listen to His instruction, trust His perspective, and follow the path He reveals rather than relying only on their own understanding. God’s guidance comes from His perfect knowledge, His faithful character, and His desire for His people to walk in righteousness and blessing.

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:

1. What does God promise to do for those who trust Him according to Psalm 32:8?

Answer:
God promises three forms of personal guidance: He will instruct, teach, and counsel His people. These words show that God is actively involved in helping believers understand His will and make wise decisions.

To instruct means that God provides direction and reveals the principles by which His people should live. To teach means that God patiently helps His followers grow in understanding and maturity. To counsel means that God provides wisdom and advice based on His perfect knowledge of every situation.

This promise demonstrates that God does not expect His people to navigate life alone. He provides His Word, His Spirit, and His presence to guide them. His guidance is not merely about avoiding mistakes; it is about becoming the people He created them to be and walking faithfully in His purposes.

2. What does it mean that God guides us “with my eye upon you”?

Answer:
The phrase “with my eye upon you” describes God’s attentive care and constant awareness of His people. God’s guidance is not like a distant command from someone who does not understand our circumstances. Instead, He watches over us with love, compassion, and protection.

This phrase reminds believers that God sees the challenges, decisions, struggles, and uncertainties they face. His guidance comes from a Father who knows His children completely. He understands their weaknesses, their needs, and their future.

Knowing that God’s eye is upon us should bring confidence and peace. We can follow His direction because His guidance is rooted in love. Even when His path differs from our plans, we can trust that He sees what we cannot see and leads us toward what is best.

3. Why is God’s guidance necessary for believers?

Answer:
God’s guidance is necessary because human understanding is limited. People often make decisions based on incomplete information, emotions, personal desires, or temporary circumstances. While human wisdom can be valuable, it cannot compare with God’s perfect knowledge.

Throughout Scripture, God reminds His people that His ways are higher than their ways and His thoughts are greater than their thoughts. Without His guidance, people can easily follow paths that appear right but ultimately lead away from His purposes.

God’s guidance helps believers develop wisdom, avoid harmful choices, and remain faithful to His calling. It also provides confidence during uncertain times because believers know their lives are directed by the One who knows the beginning and the end.

4. How does God provide guidance to His people today?

Answer:
God provides guidance today primarily through His Word, the Holy Spirit, prayer, and wise counsel from other believers.

The Bible reveals God’s character, His commands, and the principles necessary for righteous living. Through Scripture, believers learn what pleases God and how to make decisions that honor Him.

The Holy Spirit helps believers understand truth, brings conviction, and gives wisdom in applying God’s Word to daily life. Prayer allows believers to seek God’s direction and submit their desires to His will.

God may also use mature believers, pastors, teachers, and godly mentors to provide encouragement and wisdom. However, all guidance must be tested against the truth of Scripture because God’s Word remains the ultimate authority.

5. What is the believer’s responsibility when seeking God’s guidance?

Answer:
The believer’s responsibility is to listen, trust, and obey. God promises to guide, but His people must be willing to follow the direction He provides.

Listening requires humility because it means recognizing that God’s wisdom is greater than our own. Trust requires faith because God’s direction may not always be immediately understood. Obedience requires action because knowing the right path is meaningless if we refuse to walk on it.

A person who seeks God’s guidance should approach Him with an open heart, a willingness to surrender personal desires, and a commitment to follow His leading. God faithfully guides those who sincerely desire to honor Him.

6. How does Psalm 32:8 connect with the experience of forgiveness and restoration?

Answer:
Psalm 32:8 follows David’s testimony of confession, forgiveness, and restored fellowship with God. Before receiving forgiveness, David experienced the heavy burden of unconfessed sin. After turning back to God, he discovered the joy and peace of restored relationship.

This context shows that God’s guidance is closely connected to a right relationship with Him. Sin can cloud our understanding and separate us from God’s direction, but confession restores fellowship and allows us to experience His leadership again.

God does not merely forgive His people and leave them alone. He forgives them so they can walk with Him, learn from Him, and follow His path. His guidance is part of His restoring work in the lives of His children.

7. How can Psalm 32:8 encourage believers facing uncertain decisions?

Answer:
Psalm 32:8 provides assurance that believers do not have to face uncertainty alone. When difficult decisions arise, God promises to provide direction and wisdom.

This does not mean every answer will come immediately or that every decision will be easy. Sometimes God guides through a process of prayer, patience, and growing understanding. However, believers can have confidence that God is faithful and will not abandon those who seek Him.

The verse encourages believers to replace anxiety with trust. Instead of depending only on personal reasoning, they can seek God’s wisdom and believe that He will lead them according to His perfect plan.

Life Application:

Psalm 32:8 reminds believers that God is not only the Savior who forgives sin but also the Shepherd who guides His people. The same God who restores us also directs our steps. As we remain close to Him, listen to His Word, and trust His wisdom, we can walk confidently knowing that His eye is upon us and His guidance is faithful.
