Help Comes From the Lord
I’ll never forget when I was a little girl, around 7 years old that I memorized Psalm 121 and recited it to my Sunday school teacher for a pack of gum. It’s still something I can recite today and when things might be challenging, the Holy Spirit brings this scripture to mind.
Psalm 121:1-8 ESV
- I lift up my eyes to the hills, from where does my help come?
- My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
- He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
- Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
- The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand.
- The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
- The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
- The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
This passage reminds us that our help comes from the Lord, the creator of the heavens and earth and he is watching over each one of us 24/7 personally, protecting us and watching over our life.
When I’m outside here in Arizona, I can see the mountains, and I often find myself looking at them and being reminded, “My help comes from the Lord.” Just like the singer of this Psalm looked toward the hills—likely the distant hills of Jerusalem—as he traveled toward the city to fulfill his pilgrimage, I am reminded to look beyond my circumstances and place my trust in the Lord.
Why do I so often want to take things into my own hands and try to control the situation? When I do, it only brings fear, anxiety, and stress. I know that I cannot do things on my own. I need the Lord’s help.
This means that no matter where I am or what I am facing, I can seek the Lord for His strength, guidance, and help. I don’t have to reach a certain destination before I receive His help. The Lord walks with me along the journey and leads me toward the destination.
Psalm 121:3 asks, “He will not let your foot be moved.” What a comforting reminder that God is watching over us and helping us remain steady. As we stand in His presence, remain obedient to Him, and put on the full armor of God, He protects us from the enemy.
Ephesians 6:11 says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
With Christ in our lives, we have every reason to stand confidently as believers in Jesus. We do not have to face life on our own. Our help comes from the Lord, and He walks with us every step of the way. Here are some ways we stand confidently in Christ:
- We stand in grace (Romans 5:2) “Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
- We stand in the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1) “Now I would remind you, brothers of the gospel I preached to you which you received in which you stand.”
- We stand in courage and strength (1 Corinthians 16:13-14) “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men be strong. Let all you do be done in love.”
- We stand in faith (2 Corinthians 1:24) “Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy for you stand firm in your faith.”
- We stand in Christian liberty (Galatians 5:1) “For freedom Christ has set us free, stand firm therefore and do not submit against a yoke of slavery.”
- We stand in Christian unity (Philippians 1:27) “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.”
- We stand in the Lord (Philippians 4:1) “Therefore my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.”
- We will stand perfect and complete in the will of God (Colossians 4:12) “Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God.”
This brings me so much confidence to know the Lord is standing with me in anything that comes my way. How are you currently standing?
