Things We Should Do
Encouragement
Jude 1:20-21 encourages believers to remain spiritually strong and confident in God’s care, especially when facing false teaching, doubt, or difficult circumstances.
The passage highlights four key encouragements:
- Build yourself up in the faith
- Believers are not meant to remain spiritually stagnant.
- By growing in God’s truth, studying Scripture, and strengthening trust in Christ, faith becomes more resilient.
- Pray in the Holy Spirit
- We are not left to depend solely on our own strength or wisdom.
- The Holy Spirit helps guide, strengthen, and align our prayers with God’s will.
- Keep yourselves in God’s love
- This is not about earning God’s love, but living within the awareness and enjoyment of it.
- Jude reminds Christians to stay close to God through obedience, faith, and fellowship with Him.
- Look forward to Christ’s mercy and eternal life
- Believers have a future hope beyond present struggles.
- Jesus will ultimately bring His people into eternal life, giving confidence and perseverance today.
Practical encouragement: Jude 1:20-21 reminds us that when challenges arise, we should keep growing in faith, depend on the Holy Spirit in prayer, remain rooted in God’s love, and fix our eyes on the eternal hope found in Jesus Christ. This hope enables us to endure faithfully until He returns.
Bible Lesson
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. (Jude 1:20-21 ESV)
We find our verses in a section of Jude 1 titled, “A Call to Persevere” in the ESV Study Bible. The section begins with a warning that “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions. It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit” (verses 18 and 19). The focus then turns to us as believers and in our two verses, we are instructed to do four things: (1) build ourselves up in our most holy faith, (2) be praying in the Holy Spirit, (3) Stay in the love of God, and (4) wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
To build ourselves up in the faith we need to be rooted and built up in Jesus Christ and established in the faith (Colossians 2:7). Ephesians 3:17 expands being rooted to “being rooted and grounded in love.” From Acts 20:32, we find that we are built up from “the word of his grace.” To be established in the faith, we are to be careful not to be led away by diverse and strange teachings, and not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them, but let our hearts be strengthened by grace (Hebrews 13:9). It is important that we remain cleansed of our sin so that we remain fully in his grace.
Concerning prayer, Paul instructs us in Ephesians 6:18 ESV: “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.” In Romans 8:26 (ESV) he instructs us that “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Prayer is to be an attitude in that we are to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV).
Keeping ourselves in the love of God requires that we keep his commandments (1 John 5:3) and that we keep his word (1 John 2:5). It is true that there is nothing in all of creation that can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:39), but through our sin we can reduce the benefits of that love.
As we struggle in this life working out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12-13), we are to focus on doing the work assigned to us (Ephesians 2:10) and becoming more like Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29), and one day our salvation will be complete and we will fully enjoy the benefits of eternal life.
Questions with Answers
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. (Jude 1:20-21 ESV)
1. What does Jude mean when he encourages believers to build themselves up in their most holy faith?
Answer: Jude encourages believers to continually strengthen and deepen their relationship with God through spiritual growth, biblical understanding, and faithful obedience. The phrase “most holy faith” refers to the truth of the gospel entrusted to God’s people, which provides the foundation for Christian living. Building ourselves up in this faith involves studying Scripture, applying its teachings, participating in Christian fellowship, and remaining steadfast in the truth. Spiritual maturity does not happen automatically; it requires intentional commitment to God’s Word and dependence upon His grace. As believers grow in their understanding of Scripture, they become better equipped to recognize false teaching, resist temptation, and remain faithful during difficult circumstances. Jude emphasizes that a strong spiritual foundation is essential for perseverance in a world where competing beliefs and influences can challenge Christian convictions.
2. What does it mean to pray in the Holy Spirit, and why is this important for spiritual growth?
Answer: Praying in the Holy Spirit means approaching God in prayer under the guidance, influence, and power of the Holy Spirit. It involves aligning our desires, attitudes, and requests with God’s will rather than relying solely upon human understanding or personal preferences. The Holy Spirit helps believers recognize their spiritual needs, strengthens their relationship with God, and directs their hearts toward righteousness. Romans 8:26–27 explains that the Spirit helps believers in their weakness and intercedes according to God’s will. Prayer in the Spirit is therefore more than a religious routine; it is an expression of dependence upon God’s presence and guidance. Through Spirit-directed prayer, believers receive encouragement, develop spiritual discernment, and grow in their ability to trust God’s wisdom. Jude connects prayer with spiritual strengthening because consistent communication with God helps sustain faith and encourages obedience.
3. What does Jude mean by the instruction to keep ourselves in the love of God?
Answer: Keeping ourselves in the love of God means remaining within the sphere of God’s love through continued faith, obedience, and fellowship with Him. Jude is not suggesting that believers must earn God’s love through personal effort, because God’s love originates in His gracious character rather than human achievement. Instead, believers are called to respond faithfully to the love they have already received. Jesus expressed a similar principle in John 15:9–10 when He connected abiding in His love with keeping His commandments. Remaining in God’s love involves resisting sinful influences, maintaining a close relationship with Christ, and living according to biblical truth. This instruction is particularly significant because Jude’s letter warns against false teachers whose conduct demonstrates disregard for God’s authority. Believers are encouraged to remain spiritually alert and committed to the Lord, trusting that His love provides security, direction, and strength for faithful living.
4. How do building our faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, and remaining in God’s love work together in the Christian life?
Answer: These three instructions describe interconnected aspects of a healthy and growing relationship with God. Building ourselves up in the faith strengthens our understanding of biblical truth and establishes a firm spiritual foundation. Praying in the Holy Spirit deepens our dependence upon God and allows His guidance to shape our thoughts, decisions, and desires. Keeping ourselves in God’s love emphasizes the importance of continuing in faithful obedience and maintaining fellowship with Him. Each activity supports the others. Scripture provides the truth that guides our prayers, prayer strengthens our willingness to obey, and obedience demonstrates our love for God. Together, these practices encourage spiritual maturity and perseverance. Jude presents them as essential safeguards against spiritual deception and moral compromise. A believer who consistently pursues these disciplines is better prepared to withstand challenges while continuing to grow in grace and godliness.
5. What does Jude mean by waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life?
Answer: Jude directs believers to maintain a hopeful expectation of Christ’s return and the final fulfillment of God’s promise of eternal life. The mercy of Jesus Christ refers to His gracious compassion and saving work, through which believers receive forgiveness and the promise of everlasting fellowship with God. Although Christians already possess eternal life through faith in Christ, they await its complete realization when Christ returns and they enter the fullness of His eternal kingdom. Waiting does not mean remaining spiritually inactive; rather, it involves living with patient endurance, confident expectation, and faithful obedience. This hope encourages believers to remain steadfast during suffering, temptation, and uncertainty. Jude reminds Christians that their ultimate future depends upon the mercy of Jesus Christ rather than their own righteousness. The anticipation of eternal life provides encouragement to persevere, knowing that God’s promises will be completely fulfilled.
6. Why is mercy such an important part of the believer’s hope for eternal life?
Answer: Mercy is central to the Christian hope because salvation is not something human beings can earn through personal goodness, religious activity, or moral achievement. Scripture teaches that all people have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23), making divine mercy essential for reconciliation with Him. Through Jesus Christ, God extends forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life to those who trust in His Son. Jude’s reference to the mercy of Jesus Christ reminds believers that their final salvation rests upon the compassion and faithfulness of their Savior. Even as Christians pursue holiness and obedience, they remain dependent upon God’s grace. This understanding produces humility, gratitude, and confidence rather than spiritual pride. Recognizing that eternal life is a gift of mercy also encourages believers to extend compassion and forgiveness to others, reflecting the gracious character of the Lord who has saved them.
7. How does Jude 1:20–21 help believers remain faithful in a world filled with false teaching and spiritual distractions?
Answer: Jude provides a practical framework for spiritual perseverance by directing believers toward four essential responsibilities: strengthening their faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, remaining in God’s love, and anticipating the mercy of Jesus Christ. These instructions are especially meaningful within the larger context of Jude’s letter, which warns against false teachers who distort God’s grace and encourage ungodly behavior. Building faith through biblical truth helps believers distinguish sound doctrine from deception. Prayer in the Holy Spirit develops spiritual sensitivity and dependence upon God’s guidance. Remaining in God’s love encourages consistent obedience and guards against the destructive influence of sin. Looking forward to eternal life keeps believers focused upon God’s promises rather than temporary worldly attractions. Together, these practices establish a pattern of Christian living centered upon truth, spiritual dependence, love, and hope. Jude teaches that believers can remain faithful amid spiritual challenges by continually relying upon God’s provision and maintaining their commitment to Jesus Christ.
8. How can believers apply the instructions of Jude 1:20–21 to their daily lives?
Answer: Believers can apply Jude’s teaching by developing daily habits that encourage spiritual growth and strengthen their relationship with God. Building faith begins with regularly reading, studying, and reflecting upon Scripture, allowing biblical truth to shape personal beliefs and decisions. Praying in the Holy Spirit involves seeking God’s guidance throughout the day, bringing concerns before Him, and remaining sensitive to His direction through His Word. Keeping ourselves in God’s love requires intentional obedience, repentance when we sin, and a commitment to demonstrate Christlike love in our relationships. Waiting for Christ’s mercy means approaching each day with an eternal perspective, remembering that present difficulties are temporary and God’s promises are everlasting. These practices should not be viewed merely as religious obligations but as expressions of a living relationship with Jesus Christ. As believers consistently follow these principles, they develop greater spiritual discernment, stronger faith, deeper gratitude, and a more confident hope in the eternal life promised through their Savior.
Central Truth of Jude 1:20–21
Spiritual perseverance is sustained by growing in God’s truth, depending upon the Holy Spirit in prayer, remaining obedient within God’s love, and confidently awaiting the eternal life promised through the mercy of Jesus Christ.
Jude reminds believers that the Christian life requires both faithful participation and complete dependence upon God’s grace. The believer’s responsibility is to remain spiritually attentive and committed to Christ, while the foundation of salvation and the assurance of eternal life rest upon God’s mercy and faithfulness. This balance becomes especially clear in Jude 1:24–25, where Jude praises God as the One who is able to keep His people from stumbling and present them blameless before His glory.
