Our Confession of Hope

Encouragement

Hebrews 10:23 provides a powerful encouragement to remain steadfast in faith:

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” (NIV)

The verse encourages believers to:

  1. Hold firmly to their hope
Faith is not based on changing circumstances, emotions, or human strength. Believers are urged to cling to the hope found in God’s promises.
  2. Persevere without wavering
The phrase “hold unswervingly” (or “without wavering”) calls for spiritual endurance, especially during trials, persecution, disappointments, or seasons of uncertainty.
  3. Trust God’s character
The foundation of this confidence is not our faithfulness but God’s faithfulness. Because God always keeps His promises, believers can remain confident even when they cannot yet see the fulfillment.
Bible Lesson

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:23 ESV)

Hebrews 10 is divided into two sections. The first section is about the finality of Christ’s sacrifice and the second is about having a full assurance of faith. Our verse of study is found in the first part of the second section which starts with “Therefore” thus drawing on the first section for context. Because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we now have confidence to enter the holy place because of being cleansed by his blood. As a result, we can “draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water” (Hebrews 10:22 ESV).

This brings us to our verse in which we are instructed to “hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.” We are able to have that hope because “he who promised is faithful.”

This hope is a living hope resulting from God the Father causing us to be born again and the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:3). His death and resurrection assures us of life after death. Being born spiritually provides us with the indwelling Spirit and assures us of our salvation, a gift of his grace (Ephesians 2:8 – 9). God provides us with the faith needed to have the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

We are to hold fast to our confession without wavering. We are not to be tossed to and fro by things that come against us (Ephesians 4:14), but we are to remain steadfast not shifting from the hope of the gospel (Colossians 1:23).

It was God who called us into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord (1 Corinthians 1:9) and it is he who has promised that he will conform into the image of his Son those he has chosen (Romans 8:29). A God who is willing to sacrifice his Son for us is not a God that is about to forsake us.

Key Verse (ESV): “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” — Hebrews 10:23

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers

1. What does it mean to “hold fast the confession of our hope”?

Answer: To hold fast means to maintain a firm and unwavering commitment to our faith in Jesus Christ. The confession of our hope refers to our open acknowledgment that Jesus is our Savior, our great High Priest, and the source of our eternal salvation. This hope is not based on human optimism or favorable circumstances but on the promises of God fulfilled through Christ.

The writer of Hebrews encourages believers to remain steadfast even when facing persecution, suffering, uncertainty, or spiritual discouragement. Holding fast involves trusting God’s Word, continuing in obedience, and refusing to abandon our confidence in Christ. Our hope rests not in our ability to remain strong but in the faithfulness of the One who has promised eternal life.

2. Why does Hebrews 10:23 emphasize holding fast “without wavering”?

Answer: The phrase “without wavering” emphasizes the importance of spiritual perseverance and stability. Believers may encounter circumstances that challenge their confidence in God, including trials, opposition, unanswered prayers, and personal struggles. Such experiences can tempt Christians to question God’s promises or become discouraged in their walk of faith.

The original recipients of Hebrews faced pressures that could lead them to abandon their Christian confession. The writer urges them to remain committed to Christ rather than retreat from their faith. This does not mean believers will never experience doubts or moments of weakness. Instead, it means they should continually return to God’s truth and refuse to allow temporary circumstances to determine their ultimate confidence. Steadfast faith looks beyond present difficulties to the eternal promises of God.

3. How does God’s faithfulness provide the foundation for our hope?

Answer: The concluding statement, “for he who promised is faithful,” provides the central reason believers can remain confident. Christian hope is secure because it depends upon God’s unchanging character rather than human strength, achievement, or circumstances.

Throughout Scripture, God demonstrates His faithfulness by fulfilling His promises. His covenant promises to Abraham, His preservation of Israel, and His provision of salvation through Jesus Christ reveal that He accomplishes what He declares. The death and resurrection of Christ provide the supreme demonstration of God’s commitment to His redemptive purposes.

Because God cannot lie and does not abandon His promises, believers can trust Him even when fulfillment seems distant. His faithfulness assures us that the salvation begun through Christ will reach its intended completion. Our confidence rests in the reliability of the One who made the promise.

4. How does Hebrews 10:23 connect with the surrounding verses about approaching God and encouraging one another?

Answer: Hebrews 10:19–25 presents three closely connected responsibilities of Christian faith: drawing near to God, holding fast to our hope, and encouraging one another in love and good works.

In Hebrews 10:22, believers are invited to approach God with sincere hearts and full assurance of faith because Jesus has opened the way into God’s presence through His sacrifice. Verse 23 then calls believers to maintain their confession of hope without wavering. Verses 24–25 extend this commitment into Christian fellowship, urging believers to encourage one another and continue meeting together.

These instructions demonstrate that perseverance is both personal and communal. Christians are called to cultivate their relationship with God while strengthening others in the faith. Fellowship, worship, prayer, and mutual encouragement help believers remain steadfast. God has designed the Christian community to provide spiritual support as believers await the fulfillment of His promises.

5. What is the difference between biblical hope and ordinary human hope?

Answer: Ordinary human hope often expresses a desire for something that may or may not happen. People hope for good health, financial security, favorable outcomes, or improved circumstances, but these expectations remain uncertain because they depend upon changing conditions.

Biblical hope is fundamentally different because it rests upon the character and promises of God. It is a confident expectation of what God has declared He will accomplish. The believer’s hope includes forgiveness of sins, resurrection, eternal life, and everlasting fellowship with God through Jesus Christ.

This does not mean Christians know how every earthly situation will unfold. Rather, they know that God’s ultimate promises are certain. Biblical hope enables believers to face uncertainty without despair because their eternal future is secured through Christ. It provides an enduring perspective that reaches beyond temporary circumstances.

6. How can believers practically demonstrate unwavering hope in their daily lives?

Answer: Believers demonstrate unwavering hope by consistently placing their trust in God’s promises and allowing that confidence to influence their decisions, attitudes, and actions. This includes remaining faithful in prayer, studying Scripture, participating in Christian fellowship, and obeying God’s Word even when circumstances are difficult.

Unwavering hope also becomes visible through patience during trials, courage in adversity, forgiveness toward others, and perseverance in doing good. When believers encounter disappointment, they can acknowledge their difficulties honestly while continuing to trust God’s wisdom and faithfulness.

Maintaining hope does not require pretending that suffering is insignificant. Instead, it involves recognizing that God’s promises remain true regardless of present circumstances. As believers remember His past faithfulness and encourage one another, their confidence in His future promises grows stronger.

7. What encouragement does Hebrews 10:23 offer to Christians who are struggling with doubt or discouragement?

Answer: Hebrews 10:23 offers profound encouragement by directing attention away from the instability of human emotions and toward the unchanging faithfulness of God. Believers may experience seasons when their faith feels weak, their prayers seem unanswered, or their circumstances appear overwhelming. Yet God’s character and promises remain constant.

The verse reminds Christians that the security of their hope is not determined by the intensity of their feelings but by the reliability of the One who has promised. Even when believers struggle to understand God’s purposes, they can continue trusting Him because His faithfulness does not change.

This encouragement invites believers to return to Scripture, remember the saving work of Christ, seek strength through prayer, and receive encouragement from fellow Christians. Their confidence can be renewed by remembering that God remains faithful even when their understanding is incomplete.

Concluding Spiritual Truth

Hebrews 10:23 teaches that the strength of Christian hope rests not in the believer’s ability to hold on, but in the unwavering faithfulness of God. Because He fulfills His promises, Christians can remain steadfast in their confession of faith, persevere through life’s uncertainties, and confidently anticipate the eternal salvation secured through Jesus Christ.

The central encouragement is simple yet powerful: Hold firmly to your hope because the God who made the promise is faithful.
