One-Page Summary

Purpose of Testing

This laboratory evaluation represents the first major investigation into the systemic inflammatory illness that developed during 2021. Unlike previous annual wellness evaluations, this study was specifically designed to identify evidence of inflammation, autoimmune disease, or other systemic disorders. It marks one of the most important turning points in the Health Inventory because it documents the transition from years of stable health into a period of significant inflammatory disease.

Major Findings

Inflammatory Markers

Results

  • Sedimentation Rate (ESR): 57 mm/hr (High)
  • C-Reactive Protein (CRP): 37 mg/L (High)

Interpretation

These are the dominant findings of this report.

Both ESR and CRP were markedly elevated, providing strong laboratory evidence of active systemic inflammation. The simultaneous elevation of both inflammatory markers indicates a significant inflammatory process requiring further investigation. These abnormalities represent a dramatic departure from the previously stable laboratory profile documented from 2013 through early 2021.

Autoimmune Evaluation

Results

  • ANA Direct: Negative
  • Rheumatoid Factor (RF): <10 IU/mL (Negative)

Interpretation

Despite the markedly elevated inflammatory markers, the initial autoimmune screening studies were negative. These findings did not exclude autoimmune disease but indicated that additional rheumatologic evaluation would likely be necessary as the illness progressed.

Complete Blood Count

Results

  • WBC: 7.1 ×10³/µL
  • RBC: 4.11 ×10⁶/µL (Low)
  • Hemoglobin: 12.3 g/dL (Low)
  • Hematocrit: 37.9%
  • Platelets: 298 ×10³/µL

Interpretation

This report documents the development of mild normocytic anemia, with reductions in both red blood cell count and hemoglobin compared with the February 2021 study. White blood cell and platelet counts remained normal. In the context of markedly elevated ESR and CRP, these findings are compatible with anemia associated with systemic inflammation.

Metabolic Health

Results

  • Glucose: 94 mg/dL

Interpretation

Glucose remained within the normal reference range despite the presence of significant systemic inflammation.

Kidney Function

Results

  • BUN: 16 mg/dL
  • Creatinine: 0.92 mg/dL
  • eGFR: 76 mL/min/1.73 m²

Interpretation

Kidney function remained stable with no evidence that the inflammatory illness had affected renal function at this stage.

Liver Function

Results

  • AST: 22 IU/L
  • ALT: 13 IU/L
  • Alkaline Phosphatase: 71 IU/L
  • Bilirubin: 0.3 mg/dL

Interpretation

Liver function remained normal despite the presence of significant systemic inflammation.

Thyroid Function

Results

  • Free T4: 1.19 ng/dL
  • TSH: 3.060 μIU/mL

Interpretation

Thyroid function remained within normal reference ranges and showed no evidence that thyroid disease was contributing to the inflammatory syndrome.

Cardiac Marker

B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP)

Result

  • 19.6 pg/mL

Interpretation

BNP remained within the normal reference range, indicating no laboratory evidence of worsening cardiac wall stress at the time of this evaluation.

Magnesium

Result

  • 2.1 mg/dL

Interpretation

Magnesium remained within the normal reference range.

Overall Interpretation

This report marks the beginning of the documented inflammatory phase of your medical history. The combination of markedly elevated ESR and CRP with the emergence of mild normocytic anemia provides compelling evidence of active systemic inflammation. At the same time, kidney function, liver function, thyroid function, glucose metabolism, and BNP remained normal, suggesting that the inflammatory process had not yet resulted in widespread organ dysfunction. Although the initial autoimmune screening (ANA Direct and Rheumatoid Factor) was negative, these results did not exclude autoimmune disease and appropriately led to additional diagnostic evaluation in the months that followed.

Longitudinal Significance

This report contributes to long-term trend analysis of:

  • Systemic inflammation
  • Hematology
  • Autoimmune evaluation
  • Kidney function
  • Liver function
  • Thyroid function
  • Cardiovascular biomarkers

This report marks the first objective laboratory evidence of the inflammatory illness that became the defining medical event of 2021.

Clinical Importance

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Major Turning Point

This is one of the most significant reports in the entire Laboratory Library. It documents the transition from years of stable laboratory findings to active systemic inflammatory disease and serves as the foundation for the extensive rheumatologic investigation that followed.

Key Changes Since Previous Report

  • ESR increased to 57 mm/hr, becoming markedly elevated.
  • CRP increased to 37 mg/L, confirming active systemic inflammation.
  • Hemoglobin declined from 13.5 to 12.3 g/dL, indicating new mild anemia.
  • RBC count decreased below the reference range.
  • ANA Direct remained negative.
  • Rheumatoid Factor remained negative.
  • Kidney function, liver function, thyroid function, glucose, and BNP remained stable.

Observation

This report is one of the defining milestones in your Health Inventory. For nearly eight years (2013–early 2021), your laboratory studies showed remarkable stability across almost every body system. This report is the first clear indication that something had fundamentally changed. The simultaneous elevation of ESR (57) and CRP (37), together with the onset of mild normocytic anemia, marks the beginning of the systemic inflammatory illness that dominated the remainder of 2021. Looking back, this report serves as the bridge between your long period of good health and the intensive diagnostic journey that followed.
