God Created Male and Female
Scripture: Matthew 19:4-6
In the previous lesson we learned that Moses has allowed divorce, but Jesus claims that it was not God’s plan in the beginning. In this lesson we will cover more of what Jesus teaches about divorce.
Mt 19:4 “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”’
Not too long ago when the question of which sex you were, there were just two boxes to choose from: one box labeled male and the other one for female, but today there are several boxes for those who are unwilling to accept who God chose them to be, so that they can mark who they think they are. They might even have an operation to change their appearance in defiance of how God created them, but in the beginning, God made them either male or female.
Below are two verses that point out that there are only two choices. Genesis 1:27 ESV: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” You can look at any baby that is born and know their sex. Genesis 2:18 ESV: “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”’ In the beginning of creation, it was man (a male) that was made, but then later, God formed a female from that first male, and since then only males and females have been produced.
Verse 4 declares there are only two sexes: male and female. Verse 5 then indicates God’s plan for marriage. Man is to leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. It is understood that “wife” is a reference to a woman. Wikipedia defines a wife as “a female partner in a continuing marital relationship.” Man and woman have the necessary body parts to come together as one and produce another human, thus marriage is to consist of one man and one woman. Jesus then states, in verse 6, that two are in a natural way able to become one flesh, and that this relationship is to be permanent until death and not include anyone else.
What God has joined together in marriage, let not man separate. It appears that our hearts have again hardened, as in the time of Moses, as certificates of divorce are easily obtained for any reason and the two separating, causing hurt for all parties involved and producing a poor illustration of the relationship between Christ and the Church.
Conclusion
Marriage is to consist of one male and one female and is to remain until death. That is God’s plan, but do to sin, humans have put forth much effort to defy that plan to their shame and suffering.
