Do You Have Reason To Be Ashamed?

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV)

When I was saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8 – 9), God place a love for his word in my heart. Since that time, now nearly 70 years ago, I have read, studied and taught the Scriptures to people here in the US and for several years in China. The door has closed to me to continue teaching in China due my age and changing conditions in China. As a result of a request made by a friend in China, I established this website five years ago and started writing Bible studies of which I have now written over a thousand. These are all available from the main menu found at this link.

I have tried to do my best through daily study, to learn under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and from good Bible teachers, to rightly handle the word of truth. The adventure of working through a harmonization narrative of the gospels has been a great experience in learning about the life of Jesus and what he taught. This adventure is indexed at this link.

Writing a verse study each day has allowed me to look at many popular verses and see how they are being abused in applying them out of context. There are verses that apply only to a select group of people during a definite period of time and others that apply to all. Often when a verse is singled out it is interrupted in the context of our culture, not the culture in which it was written. These verse studies have allowed me to see these abuses and point them out.

It is God’s command to us to learn to rightly handle the word of truth as we do the work he has assigned to us (Ephesians 2:10). We are to go and present the word of truth and make disciples (Matthew 28:19), and as we do, we are able to present ourselves approved before God and not be ashamed of neglect.

How close does your life reflect the word of God? On a smaller scale, how close does your life come in living out the qualities of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, [and] self-control” (Galatians 5:22 – 23). If you were to stand before God, which we all will do one day, and were judged through the filter of the word of truth, would you be ashamed? Father, we in the western church need to take this verse in 2 Timothy much more seriously to prevent further erosion of the value and application of the word of truth.

Summary Theme

The Call to Diligent and Faithful Handling of God’s Truth.

Summary Paragraph

In 2 Timothy 2:15, the apostle Paul the Apostle exhorts Timothy to devote himself wholeheartedly to God’s work by being diligent, disciplined, and faithful in the handling of Scripture. The verse emphasizes the responsibility of a servant of God to seek God’s approval rather than human praise. A faithful worker studies carefully, lives obediently, and teaches truth accurately without distortion. Paul contrasts this faithful approach with the false teaching and careless speech that were troubling the church. The imagery of “rightly dividing the word of truth” points to careful interpretation and proper application of God’s Word so that believers are guided into truth rather than confusion. This verse remains a foundational call for all believers to pursue spiritual maturity, integrity, and faithfulness in studying and teaching the Scriptures.

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:

  1. What does it mean to “be diligent” in serving God?
    Answer:

To “be diligent” means to apply earnest effort, discipline, and persistence in one’s relationship with God and in the work He has given. Paul is calling Timothy to spiritual seriousness rather than spiritual laziness. Diligence involves studying Scripture consistently, growing in prayer, developing godly character, and faithfully carrying out ministry responsibilities. It also includes perseverance during hardship and remaining faithful even when truth is unpopular. A diligent believer seeks continual growth in understanding and obedience. This diligence is not about earning salvation but about faithfully responding to God’s grace and striving to honor Him with one’s life.
  2. Why is seeking God’s approval more important than seeking human approval?
    Answer:

Human approval is temporary, inconsistent, and often based on outward appearances, while God’s approval is eternal and rooted in truth. Paul reminds Timothy that the ultimate goal of ministry and Christian living is to please God rather than people. Many teachers in Timothy’s day adjusted truth to gain popularity or avoid opposition, but faithful servants must remain loyal to God’s Word regardless of public opinion. Seeking God’s approval produces integrity, courage, and faithfulness. It helps believers remain steadfast even when facing criticism or rejection because their confidence rests in God’s judgment rather than human praise.
  3. What does it mean to “rightly divide the word of truth”?
    Answer:

The phrase “rightly divide the word of truth” refers to handling Scripture correctly, carefully, and accurately. It carries the idea of cutting a straight path or teaching truth without error or distortion. Timothy was to interpret and teach God’s Word faithfully so that people would clearly understand God’s message. This requires study, wisdom, humility, and dependence on the Holy Spirit. Rightly handling Scripture means understanding passages in their proper context, comparing Scripture with Scripture, and applying God’s truth faithfully to life. It also means refusing to twist or misuse Scripture for personal gain, false teaching, or cultural acceptance.
  4. How can believers today apply 2 Timothy 2:15 in their daily lives?
    Answer:

Believers apply this verse by making God’s Word a central priority in life. This includes regular Bible study, prayerful meditation, careful listening to sound teaching, and a willingness to obey what Scripture says. Christians should strive to grow in discernment so they can recognize truth from error. The verse also encourages believers to live with integrity so their lives align with the truth they profess. Whether teaching others formally or simply sharing faith in everyday conversations, believers are called to represent God’s truth accurately and lovingly. Faithfulness in small daily acts of obedience reflects the diligent and approved worker Paul describes.
  5. What dangers arise when God’s Word is handled carelessly?
    Answer:

Careless handling of Scripture leads to confusion, false doctrine, spiritual immaturity, and division within the church. When people misinterpret or distort God’s Word, they may lead others away from truth and into error. False teaching can weaken faith, promote ungodliness, and damage believers spiritually. Paul warned Timothy repeatedly about destructive teachings spreading among the churches. Carelessness can also occur when believers neglect Scripture altogether, relying instead on opinions, emotions, or cultural trends. Faithful study and accurate teaching protect the church and help believers remain grounded in the truth of God.
