God’s Covenant Promise, the Gift of Peace, Delight in God’s Word, and the Humility That Leads to Honor
Old Testament Reading
2 Samuel 7:1–8:18 — God’s Covenant with David and David’s Victories
Overview:
David desired to build a house for the Lord, but God instead promised to establish David’s house and kingdom forever through a covenant that pointed ultimately to the coming Messiah. David responded with humility and worship, praising God for His greatness and faithfulness. Chapter 8 records David’s military victories over surrounding nations as the Lord gave him success wherever he went. David ruled with justice and righteousness, and his kingdom was strengthened according to God’s promise.
Theological Themes:
• God’s covenant faithfulness to David
• The promise of an everlasting kingdom fulfilled in Christ
• God’s sovereign blessing and victory
Key Verse:
2 Samuel 7:16 – “And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.”
Discussion Questions with Answers:
- Why did God refuse David’s desire to build the temple?
Answer:
God had a different plan and timing. Instead of David building a house for God, God promised to build a lasting house, or dynasty, for David that would ultimately be fulfilled through Jesus Christ. - How does the Davidic Covenant point to Christ?
Answer:
The promise of an eternal throne and kingdom could only be completely fulfilled in Jesus, the Son of David, whose reign is everlasting and whose kingdom will never end. - What do David’s victories in chapter 8 reveal about God?
Answer:
They show that God is the source of victory and blessing. David’s success came because the Lord was with him and established his kingdom according to His covenant promise.
New Testament Reading
John 14:15–31 — The Promise of the Holy Spirit and Christ’s Peace
Overview:
Jesus taught His disciples that love for Him is demonstrated through obedience to His commandments. He promised that the Father would send the Helper, the Holy Spirit, who would dwell within believers, teach them truth, and remind them of His words. Jesus assured His followers that He would not leave them as orphans and promised them His peace; a peace unlike what the world offers. Though His departure through the cross was near, Jesus encouraged the disciples to trust in Him and rejoice in the Father’s sovereign plan.
Theological Themes:
• Love expressed through obedience to Christ
• The indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit
• The peace of Christ in troubled hearts
Key Verse:
John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.”
Discussion Questions with Answers:
- How does Jesus say believers demonstrate love for Him?
Answer:
Jesus teaches that genuine love for Him is shown through obedience to His commandments. True devotion is reflected in faithful submission to His Word. - What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life?
Answer:
The Holy Spirit dwells within believers, teaches them truth, reminds them of Christ’s words, comforts them, and strengthens them to live faithfully for God. - What makes Christ’s peace different from the world’s peace?
Answer:
Worldly peace depends on circumstances, but Christ’s peace comes from reconciliation with God and confidence in His sovereign care, even during trials and uncertainty.

Rather than seeking recognition through pride, believers are called to walk humbly before the Lord, trusting Him to bring honor in His proper time.
Theological Themes:
• The fear of the Lord as the source of wisdom

Fearing the Lord means living with reverence, awe, and submission toward God. It involves honoring Him as holy and trusting His authority over every part of life. - Why does humility come before honor?
