The LORD Reigns: A Call to Worship the Holy King

Psalm 97 – The Majesty of the Reigning LORD

Overview

Psalm 97 is a majestic hymn celebrating the universal reign of God. The psalm portrays the Lord as the sovereign King whose coming is accompanied by clouds, fire, lightning, and earthquakes, revealing His awesome holiness and power. His righteous rule brings joy to those who love Him while bringing judgment upon idolatry and wickedness. The psalm calls God’s people to rejoice because His justice prevails, His glory is revealed to all nations, and His faithful servants are preserved by His unfailing love. The reign of God provides both comfort for the righteous and warning for those who oppose Him.

Theological Themes

  • The Sovereign Reign of God – The Lord rules over all the earth with unmatched authority.
  • God’s Holiness and Justice – His judgments are righteous and expose all evil.
  • The Futility of Idolatry – False gods cannot stand before the living God.
  • Protection of the Righteous – God guards those who love Him.
  • Joy in God’s Kingdom – His people rejoice because His rule is perfectly just.

Key Verse

Psalm 97:10“Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. Why does the psalm describe God’s coming with such dramatic displays of nature?

Answer:
The clouds, fire, lightning, and earthquakes communicate God’s overwhelming majesty and holiness. Throughout Scripture, these signs often accompany God’s visible revelation, reminding humanity that He is infinitely greater than His creation. His power commands respect, reverence, and worship.

2. Why are idol worshipers put to shame?

Answer:
Idols are powerless creations of human hands and cannot save or rule. When the true God reveals His glory, every false object of worship is exposed as empty and worthless. The psalm reminds believers that only the Lord deserves complete devotion.

3. What does it mean to “love the LORD” by hating evil?

Answer:
True love for God transforms one’s values. Believers seek what pleases God and reject attitudes, actions, and influences that oppose His holiness. Hatred of evil is not merely avoiding sinful behavior but actively pursuing righteousness because of love for God.

Psalm 98 – Sing a New Song to the Victorious King

Overview

Psalm 98 is a joyful celebration of God’s saving power and righteous reign. The psalm begins by calling for a “new song” because God has accomplished marvelous works of salvation. His faithfulness to Israel has become known among all nations, demonstrating His steadfast love and covenant faithfulness. The entire creation—people, seas, rivers, and mountains—is invited to rejoice because the Lord comes to judge the earth with perfect righteousness and equity. God’s judgment is presented not as something to fear for His people but as the fulfillment of His righteous kingdom.

Theological Themes

  • God the Savior – The Lord accomplishes salvation through His mighty power.
  • God’s Covenant Faithfulness – He remembers His steadfast love toward His people.
  • Universal Worship – Every nation and all creation are invited to praise Him.
  • Joyful Anticipation of God’s Judgment – His judgment establishes righteousness.
  • The Coming Kingdom of God – The Lord’s reign brings justice to the world.

Key Verse

Psalm 98:3“He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. Why is God’s salvation worthy of a “new song”?

Answer:
God continually reveals new expressions of His grace, faithfulness, and saving power. Every fresh experience of His mercy gives believers new reasons to praise Him. Worship grows as believers remember God’s ongoing work throughout history and in their own lives.

2. Why does creation join in praising God?

Answer:
Creation reflects the glory of its Creator. Though creation suffers under the effects of sin, it anticipates the day when God’s righteous reign will fully restore His world. The imagery of rivers clapping and mountains singing expresses joyful expectation for God’s perfect kingdom.

3. Why is God’s coming judgment a reason for celebration?

Answer:
Unlike imperfect human judgment, God’s judgment is completely righteous, impartial, and just. He will remove evil, vindicate His people, establish peace, and rule with perfect fairness. His judgment secures hope for all who trust Him.

Psalm 99 – Exalt the Holy King

Overview

Psalm 99 exalts the Lord as the holy King who reigns over all peoples. His throne is established above the cherubim, emphasizing His supreme authority and heavenly glory. The psalm repeatedly declares God’s holiness while recalling His faithful dealings with Moses, Aaron, and Samuel, who served as faithful intercessors before Him. Although God forgave His people, He also disciplined them when necessary, demonstrating that His holiness never compromises His justice. The psalm concludes with a call for all people to worship the Lord because He alone is holy.

Theological Themes

  • The Holiness of God – God’s holiness is central to His character.
  • God’s Righteous Government – His justice governs all nations.
  • Prayer and Intercession – God hears those who call upon Him.
  • Mercy and Discipline – God’s forgiveness never removes His commitment to justice.
  • Worship of the Holy King – Believers are called to exalt and worship Him.

Key Verse

Psalm 99:9“Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. Why is God’s holiness emphasized three times in this psalm?

Answer:
The repeated declaration highlights God’s absolute moral perfection and complete separation from sin. His holiness defines every aspect of His character, including His love, justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Worship begins with recognizing who God truly is.

2. What do Moses, Aaron, and Samuel teach us about prayer?

Answer:
These faithful servants demonstrate that God listens to those who sincerely seek Him. Their lives show the importance of obedience, faithful leadership, and interceding on behalf of others. Their example encourages believers to approach God confidently while maintaining reverence for His holiness.

3. How can God both forgive sin and punish wrongdoing?

Answer:
God’s forgiveness flows from His mercy, while His discipline reflects His justice and holiness. Throughout Scripture, God lovingly corrects His people to restore them rather than destroy them. Ultimately, His perfect balance of justice and mercy is fully revealed through Jesus Christ, who bore the penalty for sin so that believers may receive forgiveness while God’s righteousness remains fully satisfied.
