My Hiding Place
You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word. (Psalm 119:114 ESV)
Three things the Lord is to us: my hiding place, my shield, and my source of hope. The Lord is where I can go to hide from my enemies, a place of shelter where I can abide in the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1), a place where he will conceal me under the cover of his tent (Psalm 27:5); where he will cover me with his presence to hide me from the plots of men (Psalm 31:20). In the context of the New Testament, Paul says “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3 ESV). To be “hidden with Christ in God” expresses the security of God’s people as they trust in him.
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him” (Psalm 28:7 ESV). Inwardly, the Lord is my strength, and outwardly, he is my shield or source of protection. In Ephesians 6:16 that shield is expressed in terms of faith: “take up the shield of faith.” The parts of the armor are metaphors for the spiritual resources found in Jesus Christ. We have truth and righteousness (verse 14), the gospel of peace (verse 15), faith (verse 16), and salvation and the word of God (verse 17).
As the Lord protects us from our enemies, we hope in his word. This hope is not that held by the world, which is simply a wish, but is the confident expectation of what God has promised and hope’s strength is God’s faithfulness; we look for something with eager expectation. As we study the word of God, we learn of his promises and in these we hope in times of need. We are “born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3); this hope is to be “fully on the grace that will be brought to [us]at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:13).
Father the blessing of being in Christ is great for in him we are given grace (2 Timothy 1:9), find inseparable love (Romans 8:38 – 39), have redemption (Ephesians 1:7), are justified (2 Corinthians 5:21), and have become a new creation and a son of God (2 Corinthians 5:17). What a privilege it is to be in Jesus Christ.

God Is Our Refuge and Hope in His Word
Summary Paragraph
Psalm 119:114 reveals the psalmist’s deep confidence in God as both a place of safety and the source of enduring hope. In times of uncertainty, opposition, and spiritual struggle, the believer finds protection not in personal strength or earthly security but in the Lord Himself. Calling God “my hiding place and my shield” emphasizes His role as both a refuge from danger and a defender against spiritual attacks. The verse concludes with a declaration of faith: “I hope in Your word.” The psalmist’s confidence is rooted in God’s promises, knowing that His Word is trustworthy, unchanging, and sufficient for every circumstance. This verse encourages believers to seek refuge in God daily and to anchor their hope firmly in the truth of Scripture rather than in changing circumstances.
Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:
1. What does it mean that God is our “hiding place” and our “shield”?
Answer:
The image of God as a “hiding place” speaks of His protection, security, and comfort. Just as a person seeks shelter during a storm, believers can run to God during trials, fear, temptation, or sorrow. Calling God a “shield” emphasizes His active defense against spiritual enemies and life’s difficulties. God not only provides a place of refuge but also stands between His people and the attacks of the enemy. This does not mean believers will never experience hardship, but it does mean they are never abandoned. His presence surrounds them, giving peace, strength, and confidence in every situation.
2. Why does the psalmist place his hope in God’s Word instead of in circumstances?
Answer:
Circumstances constantly change, but God’s Word never changes. Human strength, wealth, health, and worldly security can all fail, but God’s promises remain true forever. The psalmist had learned through experience that God’s faithfulness could always be trusted. Scripture reveals God’s character, His covenant promises, His wisdom, and His plan for His people. By placing hope in God’s Word, believers anchor themselves to something eternal rather than temporary. This kind of hope is not wishful thinking but confident expectation based on God’s proven faithfulness throughout history.
3. How can believers make God their refuge in everyday life?
Answer:
Making God our refuge begins with developing a close relationship with Him through prayer, Scripture reading, worship, and obedience. Instead of allowing fear, anxiety, or discouragement to dominate our thinking, we intentionally bring every concern before God and trust His promises. We remember His past faithfulness, meditate on His Word, and rely on His strength rather than our own understanding. As believers consistently seek Him, they discover that His peace guards their hearts, His wisdom directs their decisions, and His presence provides confidence regardless of life’s challenges. Trusting God as our refuge transforms fear into faith and uncertainty into hope because our security rests in the One who never changes.
