“Remembering God’s Mercy, Majesty, and Mighty Works”

Why this title fits all three psalms:

  • Psalm 103 — celebrates God’s mercy, forgiveness, compassion, and steadfast love.
  • Psalm 104 — praises God’s majesty in creation and His ongoing care for all He has made.
  • Psalm 105 — recounts God’s mighty works in Israel’s history, calling His people to remember His faithfulness.

Together, they form a beautiful progression:

  • Mercy received → Majesty observed → Mighty acts remembered.

Psalm 103 – Bless the Lord for His Compassion

Overview

Psalm 103 is one of David’s greatest hymns of praise, calling both himself and all creation to bless the Lord for His abundant mercy and steadfast love. David begins by reminding himself not to forget God’s many benefits, including forgiveness, healing, redemption, steadfast love, compassion, and daily provision. The psalm celebrates God’s gracious character, emphasizing that He is slow to anger, abounding in mercy, and willing to forgive repentant sinners. David contrasts God’s eternal love with the temporary nature of human life, concluding by calling angels, heavenly hosts, and all creation to join in worship of the sovereign King.

Theological Themes

  • God’s mercy and forgiveness
  • Redemption and restoration
  • The compassion of the heavenly Father
  • The frailty of humanity
  • God’s eternal kingdom and sovereign rule

Key Verse

Psalm 103:8“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. Why does David tell himself not to forget God’s benefits?

Answer:
David understands that people easily remember hardships while forgetting God’s continual blessings. Remembering God’s forgiveness, healing, protection, provision, and steadfast love strengthens faith and produces gratitude. Worship begins with intentionally recalling God’s goodness.

2. What does this psalm teach about God’s forgiveness?

Answer:
God completely removes the guilt of those who repent. David writes that God has removed our transgressions “as far as the east is from the west,” illustrating complete forgiveness. God does not continually hold forgiven sins against His people but restores fellowship through His mercy.

3. How does God’s compassion compare with human compassion?

Answer:
David compares God’s compassion to that of a loving father toward his children. Yet God’s compassion is even greater because it is perfect, constant, and based upon His covenant love. He understands our weakness because He remembers that we are formed from dust.

Psalm 104 – The Majesty of the Creator

Overview

Psalm 104 is a magnificent hymn celebrating God’s glory as Creator and Sustainer of the universe. The psalm follows the order of creation, describing God’s control over light, heavens, waters, mountains, plants, animals, seasons, oceans, and all living creatures. Every part of creation depends upon God for life and provision. Rather than presenting creation as independent, the psalm emphasizes God’s continual involvement in sustaining everything He has made. The psalm ends with joyful worship, calling God’s people to rejoice in the Creator whose wisdom fills the earth.

Theological Themes

  • God’s power as Creator
  • God’s continual providence
  • The order and beauty of creation
  • Humanity’s dependence upon God
  • Worship through observing creation

Key Verse

Psalm 104:24“O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. What does Psalm 104 reveal about God’s relationship with creation?

Answer:
God is not merely the Creator who made the world and departed. He continually sustains creation by providing food, water, seasons, life, and order. Every living creature depends upon Him daily for existence.

2. How does creation point people toward God?

Answer:
The beauty, complexity, and order of creation reveal God’s wisdom, power, creativity, and generosity. Every mountain, forest, ocean, and living creature reflects His glory and invites humanity to worship the One who made all things.

3. Why is God’s providence important to believers?

Answer:
Providence reminds believers that God actively governs His world. Just as He faithfully sustains creation, He also faithfully cares for His people. His provision gives confidence that nothing occurs outside His sovereign control.

Psalm 105 – Remember the Faithfulness of God

Overview

Psalm 105 recounts Israel’s history from Abraham through the Exodus, emphasizing God’s covenant faithfulness throughout every generation. The psalm reminds God’s people to remember His mighty works, His promises, and His miraculous interventions. It traces God’s covenant with Abraham, His protection of the patriarchs, Joseph’s preservation in Egypt, Moses’ leadership during the Exodus, and God’s provision in the wilderness before bringing Israel into the Promised Land. The focus is not Israel’s faithfulness but God’s unwavering commitment to fulfill every promise He made.

Theological Themes

  • God’s covenant faithfulness
  • Remembering God’s mighty works
  • God’s sovereignty over history
  • Fulfillment of God’s promises
  • God’s guidance and provision

Key Verse

Psalm 105:8“He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. Why does the psalm repeatedly call God’s people to remember His works?

Answer:
Remembering God’s past faithfulness strengthens present faith. Israel could trust God in every new challenge because He had consistently fulfilled His promises throughout history. Remembering God’s works encourages confidence that He remains faithful today.

2. What does Joseph’s story teach about God’s sovereignty?

Answer:
Although Joseph experienced betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, God used every circumstance to preserve His covenant people during famine. What appeared to be tragedy became the means by which God fulfilled His larger purposes. God’s providence often works through difficult circumstances.

3. What is the significance of God’s covenant in Psalm 105?

Answer:
The covenant demonstrates God’s unchanging character. Unlike human promises that often fail, God’s covenant endures forever. Every promise made to Abraham ultimately points to God’s redemptive plan fulfilled through Jesus Christ. Believers today can trust God’s promises because His faithfulness has been proven throughout history.
