Psalm 103 – Bless the Lord for His Compassion

Overview

Psalm 103 is one of David’s greatest hymns of praise, calling both himself and all creation to bless the Lord for His abundant mercy and steadfast love. David begins by reminding himself not to forget God’s many benefits, including forgiveness, healing, redemption, steadfast love, compassion, and daily provision. The psalm celebrates God’s gracious character, emphasizing that He is slow to anger, abounding in mercy, and willing to forgive repentant sinners. Every part of creation depends upon God for life and provision. Rather than presenting creation as independent, the psalm emphasizes God’s continual involvement in sustaining everything He has made. The psalm ends with joyful worship, calling God’s people to rejoice in the Creator whose wisdom fills the earth.
