“The Righteous, the Exalted Lord, and His Saving Power”
Why this fits all three psalms:
- Psalm 112 — celebrates the character and blessings of the righteous who fear the Lord.
- Psalm 113 — lifts up the Lord who is exalted above all nations yet stoops to raise the lowly.
- Psalm 114 — remembers God’s mighty deliverance of Israel, when creation itself responded to His saving presence.
Together they form a beautiful progression:
- The righteous who trust God → The God who is exalted → The God who delivers with power.
Psalm 112 – The Blessings of the Righteous
Overview
Psalm 112 describes the life of the person who fears the Lord and delights in His commandments. It presents a portrait of godly character, showing how reverence for God influences every area of life. The righteous are portrayed as generous, compassionate, steadfast in adversity, and unwavering in their trust in God. While earthly wealth and honor may accompany such a life, the psalm emphasizes that the greatest blessing is a stable heart founded upon faith. In contrast, the wicked witness God’s blessings upon the righteous but ultimately perish in frustration because their desires cannot overcome God’s purposes.
Theological Themes
- The Fear of the Lord Brings Blessing
- Genuine reverence for God produces a life marked by wisdom, obedience, and enduring blessing.
- Steadfast Trust in God
- The righteous remain confident even during difficult circumstances because their hope rests in the Lord.
- Generosity Reflects God’s Character
- God’s people demonstrate His compassion by giving freely to those in need.
- God Honors the Faithful
- Though the world may oppose them, God establishes and remembers those who faithfully serve Him.
Key Verse
Psalm 112:7
“He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.”
Discussion Questions with Answers
1. Why is fearing the Lord the foundation of a blessed life?
Answer:
Biblical fear is not terror but reverent love, respect, and submission to God’s authority. Those who delight in God’s commandments develop wisdom, integrity, and stability. Their blessings flow from living according to God’s design rather than merely receiving material prosperity.
2. How does Psalm 112 describe the character of a righteous person?
Answer:
The righteous are gracious, compassionate, generous, just, dependable, courageous, and faithful. Their lives reflect God’s own character, making them a blessing to others while bringing glory to Him.
3. What enables believers to remain fearless during difficult times?
Answer:
Confidence comes from trusting God’s sovereignty rather than changing circumstances. Because God remains faithful, believers can face uncertainty with peace, knowing that nothing occurs outside His loving care.
Psalm 113 – The Lord Exalted Above All Nations
Overview
Psalm 113 opens the collection known as the Egyptian Hallel (Psalms 113–118), traditionally sung during Israel’s great festivals, especially Passover. The psalm calls God’s servants to praise Him continually because He is exalted above all nations and yet lovingly stoops to care for the humble. Although the Lord reigns over heaven and earth, He lifts the poor from the dust and blesses the barren woman with a family. His greatness is revealed not merely in His majesty but in His compassion toward those who cannot help themselves.
Theological Themes
- God’s Supreme Exaltation
- The Lord reigns above every nation, ruler, and power.
- God’s Compassion for the Humble
- The Almighty notices and lifts those whom society overlooks.
- Praise Belongs to God Alone
- God’s greatness deserves continual worship from every generation.
- God Reverses Human Circumstances
- The Lord delights in raising the lowly and demonstrating His grace.
Key Verse
Psalm 113:7–8
“He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.”
Discussion Questions with Answers
1. Why does the psalm call for continual praise?
Answer:
God deserves praise because His greatness is eternal, His rule is universal, and His mercy is constant. Every generation and every nation have reason to worship Him.
2. What is remarkable about God’s greatness according to Psalm 113?
Answer:
Although God is infinitely exalted above creation, He humbles Himself to care personally for ordinary people. His greatness is displayed not only in power but also in mercy.
3. How does this psalm point toward the ministry of Jesus Christ?
Answer:
Jesus consistently lifted the poor, healed the broken, welcomed the outcast, and gave hope to sinners. He perfectly revealed the compassionate heart of God described in Psalm 113 by humbling Himself to save humanity.
Psalm 114 – God’s Presence Brings Deliverance
Overview
Psalm 114 poetically celebrates Israel’s exodus from Egypt and God’s powerful presence among His people. Nature itself responds to the Creator as the Red Sea parts, the Jordan River retreats, and mountains skip like rams. These vivid images emphasize that all creation recognizes the authority of its Maker. The psalm concludes by reminding readers that God’s presence transforms impossible situations, just as He brought water from solid rock during Israel’s wilderness journey. The God who redeemed Israel remains sovereign over creation and faithful to His covenant people.
Theological Themes
- God Is the Divine Deliverer
- The Exodus demonstrates God’s saving power over every earthly obstacle.
- Creation Submits to Its Creator
- Nature itself responds to the authority of the Lord.
- God’s Presence Changes Everything
- Where God is present, impossible barriers become opportunities for His glory.
- The Covenant Faithfulness of God
- God’s mighty acts fulfill His promises to His people.
Key Verse
Psalm 114:7
“Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob.”
Discussion Questions with Answers
1. Why does the psalm describe mountains and seas as responding to God?
Answer:
The poetic imagery emphasizes God’s absolute sovereignty over creation. The Red Sea, the Jordan River, and Mount Sinai all testify that nothing in creation can resist the commands of its Creator.
2. What does the Exodus teach believers today?
Answer:
The Exodus reveals that God delivers His people from bondage through His mighty power. Just as He rescued Israel from Egypt, He delivers believers from the bondage of sin through Jesus Christ and continues to guide them through life’s wilderness.
3. How does God’s presence transform impossible situations?
Answer:
God’s presence brings hope where there seems to be no way forward. He parts seas, provides water in deserts, strengthens weary hearts, and accomplishes what human strength cannot. Believers can therefore trust Him in every circumstance, knowing that the God who acted in Israel’s history remains faithful today.
