The Benefit of Humility
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you. (1 Peter 5:6 ESV)
The letter of 1 Peter has the theme of persevering in faith while suffering persecution. During that suffering, believers are to surrender themselves entirely to Jesus Christ, who suffered so greatly for them, by submitting to his wise guidance for their lives.
Verse 5 provides some wise instruction in leading up to our verse of study: “Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”’ In James 4:6 ESV, we read the same words: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Paul exhorts us in Ephesians 4:1 – 2 (ESV) 1 “to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.”
Humility is a characteristic we are to put on like a piece of clothing: 12 “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” (Colossians 3:12 – 13 ESV). We are to look at the example of humility as demonstrated by Jesus Christ: 1 “If there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:1 – 3 ESV).
It is under the mighty hand of God that we are to humble ourselves. In the context of suffering we are reminded of God delivering Israel from bondage in “Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand.” As we humble ourselves under his mighty hand, we are then in a position to experience his great power of working in and through us in our time of need.
The people Peter was writing to were suffering greatly from persecution. To them as it is to those living under persecution today, Peter is instructing them and us to come under his mighty hand with humility because there we will find the power necessary to love and forgive those who are persecutions us. As Jesus proclaimed the gospel, he suffered under persecution and died on the cross, but in the process, he purchased our salvation. As we suffer under persecution, maybe even dying for our faith, we will at the proper time be exalted to a position in heaven. That proper time is after we have completed the work God has for us to do in this life. God will empower our witness as we suffer under persecution to touch the hearts of others with the gospel. Maybe there is no other way for our evil persecutors to hear the gospel than for us to suffer under their hands with love and forgiveness.
Father, I pray for those who suffer under persecution. I pray for their encouragement, endurance and steadfastness of faith.

Humility Before God Leads to His Exaltation and Care
Summary Paragraph
1 Peter 5:6 calls believers to humble themselves under the mighty hand of God, trusting His timing and His sovereign purposes. Peter writes to Christians experiencing suffering and opposition, reminding them that God is fully aware of their circumstances and will lift them up at the proper time. Humility is not weakness or self-devaluation; it is a willing submission to God’s authority, recognizing that He alone is the source of strength, wisdom, and deliverance. This verse teaches that believers do not need to promote themselves, defend their own worth, or seek recognition from others. Instead, they can faithfully surrender their lives to God, trusting that He will accomplish His purposes and provide honor, restoration, and blessing according to His perfect timing.
Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:
1. What does it mean to “humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God”?
Answer:
To humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand means to willingly place ourselves under His authority, recognizing that God is greater, wiser, and more powerful than we are. The phrase “mighty hand” reflects God’s power and sovereignty throughout Scripture, especially His ability to deliver His people and accomplish His purposes.
Humility before God requires acknowledging that our plans, understanding, and abilities are limited. It means surrendering our desire to control every situation and trusting God’s wisdom even when circumstances are difficult. True humility is not thinking less of ourselves; it is recognizing that our lives belong to God and that He deserves first place in every decision.
For believers facing suffering, Peter’s message was a reminder that God had not abandoned them. They could remain faithful because the same God who allows trials is powerful enough to sustain and ultimately restore them.
2. Why does God often allow a period of humility before He brings exaltation?
Answer:
God uses humility to shape the character of His people. Before God entrusts someone with greater responsibility, influence, or blessing, He often teaches dependence, patience, and obedience. Humility removes pride and helps believers understand that every gift, opportunity, and success comes from God.
Throughout Scripture, God worked through people who first learned humility. Moses spent years in the wilderness before leading Israel. Joseph endured slavery and imprisonment before becoming a leader in Egypt. David waited many years before becoming king. In each case, God used seasons of difficulty to prepare them for His purposes.
The “exaltation” Peter describes is not necessarily worldly success or recognition. It may include spiritual maturity, God’s approval, eternal reward, or being lifted out of suffering according to His will. God’s timing is always perfect, even when it requires waiting.
3. How does humility help believers respond to suffering, criticism, or difficult circumstances?
Answer:
Humility allows believers to trust God rather than being consumed by fear, anger, or the need to prove themselves. When difficulties come, pride often causes people to demand immediate answers or seek revenge against those who hurt them. Humility enables Christians to place their circumstances into God’s hands.
A humble believer understands that God sees every injustice, knows every struggle, and will ultimately bring justice and restoration. Instead of allowing suffering to produce bitterness, humility produces dependence on God.
This does not mean believers ignore problems or refuse to act wisely. Rather, it means they respond with faith, patience, and obedience instead of relying only on their own strength. Humility allows God to work through difficult circumstances and transform them into opportunities for spiritual growth.
4. What is the relationship between humility and trusting God’s timing?
Answer:
Humility recognizes that God’s timing is better than our own. Many struggles in life come from wanting immediate solutions, recognition, or relief. However, God often works through seasons of waiting because He is developing faith and preparing us for what lies ahead.
The phrase “at the proper time” reminds believers that God is never late. His timing is guided by His perfect knowledge and eternal purposes. While humans often focus on immediate results, God focuses on shaping our character and accomplishing His greater plan.
Trusting God’s timing requires patience and faith. It means believing that even when we cannot see what God is doing, He is still working. Humility allows believers to wait confidently because their hope is placed in God rather than in circumstances.
5. How can believers practice humility in their daily lives?
Answer:
Believers practice humility by recognizing their dependence on God in every area of life. This includes seeking God’s guidance through prayer, listening to His Word, accepting correction, serving others, and giving God credit for accomplishments.
Practical humility includes:
- Putting others before ourselves.
- Being willing to admit mistakes.
- Receiving instruction and correction.
- Serving without seeking recognition.
- Trusting God rather than relying on personal strength.
- Giving thanks for every blessing.
Jesus is the greatest example of humility. Though He was the Son of God, He willingly served others and submitted Himself to the Father’s will. Following Christ means developing the same attitude of humble obedience and trust.
Summary Thought:
God does not need us to exalt ourselves; He invites us to humble ourselves, trust His power, and wait for His perfect timing. Those who surrender to Him will experience His faithfulness and His lifting up according to His purposes.
