The God Who Calls Us to Faithful Living: Devotion, Courage, Worship, and Integrity

Why this title fits

  • 2 Chronicles 24–25 — God calls His people to steadfast devotion, even when leaders rise and fall.
  • Romans 12 — God calls believers to transformed living marked by love, sacrifice, and courage.
  • Psalm 22:19–31 — God is worthy of worship, answering His people and drawing nations to Himself.
  • Proverbs 20:8–10 — God values integrity, honesty, and righteousness in everyday life.

Together, these passages highlight a God who shapes His people to live faithfully, heart, mind, and action, under His watchful care.

Old Testament Reading

2 Chronicles 24:1–25:28 – The Rise and Fall of Kings Joash and Amaziah

Overview

These chapters trace the reigns of Kings Joash and Amaziah of Judah, demonstrating both the blessings of obedience and the dangers of abandoning God. Joash begins well under the guidance of the priest Jehoiada, restoring the temple and leading the nation in worship. However, after Jehoiada’s death, Joash turns to idolatry, rejects God’s prophets, and orders the death of Zechariah, Jehoiada’s son. God’s judgment follows through military defeat and Joash’s assassination. Amaziah similarly begins his reign by obeying God’s law, defeats Edom with God’s help, but later adopts the gods of the defeated nation and refuses prophetic correction. His pride leads to a disastrous war with Israel and ultimately to his assassination. Together these accounts emphasize that finishing well before God is more important than beginning well.

Theological Themes

  • Faithfulness must continue throughout one’s life.
  • God blesses obedience but judges persistent rebellion.
  • Spiritual mentors are valuable, but personal devotion to God is essential.
  • Pride and idolatry inevitably lead to destruction.
  • God’s prophets faithfully call His people to repentance.

Key Verse

2 Chronicles 24:20“Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people and said to them, ‘Thus says God, “Why do you break the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has also forsaken you.”‘”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. Why did Joash’s spiritual life decline after Jehoiada died?

Answer:
Joash depended heavily upon Jehoiada’s leadership instead of developing his own lasting relationship with God. Once his mentor was gone, ungodly advisers influenced him toward idolatry. This illustrates the importance of cultivating personal faith that stands even when spiritual leaders are absent.

2. Why was Zechariah’s death such a serious sin?

Answer:
Zechariah faithfully delivered God’s warning, yet Joash repaid Jehoiada’s kindness by murdering his son in the temple court. This act demonstrated complete rejection of God’s authority and revealed a hardened heart unwilling to repent.

3. What lesson does Amaziah teach about partial obedience?

Answer:
Amaziah obeyed God in many areas but later embraced the idols of Edom and ignored God’s warnings. Partial obedience eventually became outright rebellion. God desires wholehearted devotion rather than selective obedience.

New Testament Reading

Romans 12:1–21 – Living as a Living Sacrific

Overview

After explaining God’s saving work throughout the first eleven chapters of Romans, Paul now describes how believers should live. Christians are called to present themselves as living sacrifices, transformed by the renewing of their minds rather than conforming to the world’s values. This transformed life produces humility, faithful service within the body of Christ, sincere love, perseverance, generosity, forgiveness, and peace. Instead of seeking revenge, believers overcome evil with good, reflecting the character of Christ in every relationship.

Theological Themes

  • Believers are called to wholehearted worship through daily living.
  • Spiritual transformation begins with renewed minds.
  • Every Christian possesses gifts for serving Christ’s body.
  • Genuine love is demonstrated through action.
  • Evil is overcome through God’s goodness rather than personal vengeance.

Key Verse

Romans 12:1–2“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. What does it mean to be a living sacrifice?

Answer:
Unlike Old Testament sacrifices that died upon the altar, believers continually dedicate every part of life to God’s service. Our worship includes our thoughts, actions, relationships, work, and daily decisions, all surrendered to God’s will.

2. How does God transform believers?

Answer:
Transformation occurs through the renewing of the mind as believers continually submit to Scripture, the Holy Spirit, prayer, and obedience. Changed thinking leads to changed living, allowing Christians to discern and follow God’s perfect will.

3. Why does Paul tell believers to overcome evil with good?

Answer:
Retaliation only multiplies evil, while responding with Christlike love reflects God’s character and leaves justice in His hands. Goodness has the power to soften hearts, preserve Christian witness, and demonstrate the gospel.

Psalms Reading

Psalm 22:19–31 – The Victory of the Suffering Messiah

Overview

The closing portion of Psalm 22 moves from desperate prayer to triumphant praise. David expresses confidence that God will answer his cries and deliver him. The psalm expands beyond David’s experience to portray the worldwide reign of the coming Messiah. All nations, generations, and peoples will worship the Lord because of His saving work. This prophetic passage finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, whose suffering gave way to resurrection and universal glory.

Theological Themes

  • God hears the cries of His faithful people.
  • Suffering is followed by God’s ultimate victory.
  • The Messiah’s salvation extends to every nation.
  • Worship belongs to God alone.
  • God’s faithfulness will be proclaimed to future generations.

Key Verse

Psalm 22:27“All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. How does this section of Psalm 22 point to Jesus Christ?

Answer:
The earlier suffering described in Psalm 22 parallels Christ’s crucifixion, while these verses anticipate His resurrection and worldwide kingdom. Through Christ’s victory, people from every nation are invited into God’s family.

2. Why is worldwide worship emphasized?

Answer:
God’s plan has always included every people group. His salvation is not limited to one nation but extends to all who trust Him, fulfilling His promises to Abraham and ultimately through Christ.

3. What encouragement does this psalm offer believers?

Answer:
It reminds believers that suffering is not the end of God’s story. God hears prayer, fulfills His promises, and ultimately brings victory and eternal praise through His sovereign plan.

Proverbs Reading

Proverbs 20:8–10 – The Righteous Judge Values Integrity

Overview

These proverbs emphasize the importance of justice, discernment, and honesty. A wise ruler carefully distinguishes between right and wrong, protecting society through righteous judgment. God also condemns dishonest business practices, such as using unequal weights and measures to deceive others. Integrity in both leadership and daily business reflects God’s holy character and promotes justice within the community.

Theological Themes

  • God values righteous leadership.
  • Justice requires wisdom and discernment.
  • Honesty honors God in everyday life.
  • God opposes deceit and dishonest gain.
  • Integrity reflects God’s righteous character.

Key Verse

Proverbs 20:10“Differing weights and differing measures, both of them are abominable to the LORD.”

Discussion Questions with Answers

1. Why is righteous judgment important for leaders?

Answer:
God entrusts leaders with the responsibility of protecting justice and restraining evil. Wise judgment promotes peace, protects the innocent, and reflects God’s own righteous rule over His people.

2. What do unequal weights represent today?

Answer:
They symbolize every form of dishonesty; false advertising, deceptive contracts, cheating customers, manipulating finances, or any practice that gains advantage through deceit. God calls His people to honesty in every area of life.

3. How does integrity strengthen a believer’s witness?

Answer:
When Christians consistently practice honesty and fairness, they demonstrate God’s truthfulness before the world. Integrity builds trust, honors Christ, and provides a powerful testimony of a transformed life.
