Old Testament Reading

2 Chronicles 24:1–25:28 – The Rise and Fall of Kings Joash and Amaziah

Overview

These chapters trace the reigns of Kings Joash and Amaziah of Judah, demonstrating both the blessings of obedience and the dangers of abandoning God. Joash begins well under the guidance of the priest Jehoiada, restoring the temple and leading the nation in worship. However, after Jehoiada’s death, Joash turns to idolatry, rejects God’s prophets, and orders the death of Zechariah, Jehoiada’s son. God’s judgment follows through military defeat and Joash’s assassination. Amaziah similarly begins his reign by obeying God’s law, defeats Edom with God’s help, but later adopts the gods of the defeated nation and refuses prophetic correction. His pride leads to a disastrous war with Israel and ultimately to his assassination. Together these accounts emphasize that finishing well before God is more important than beginning well.

1. Why did Joash’s spiritual life decline after Jehoiada died?

Answer:
Joash depended heavily upon Jehoiada’s leadership instead of developing his own lasting relationship with God. Once his mentor was gone, ungodly advisers influenced him toward idolatry. This illustrates the importance of cultivating personal faith that stands even when spiritual leaders are absent.

2. Why was Zechariah’s death such a serious sin?

Answer:
Zechariah faithfully delivered God’s warning, yet Joash repaid Jehoiada’s kindness by murdering his son in the temple court. This act demonstrated complete rejection of God’s authority and revealed a hardened heart unwilling to repent.

3. What lesson does Amaziah teach about partial obedience?

Answer:

After explaining God’s saving work throughout the first eleven chapters of Romans, Paul now describes how believers should live. Christians are called to present themselves as living sacrifices, transformed by the renewing of their minds rather than conforming to the world’s values. This transformed life produces humility, faithful service within the body of Christ, sincere love, perseverance, generosity, forgiveness, and peace. Instead of seeking revenge, believers overcome evil with good, reflecting the character of Christ in every relationship.

Psalm 22:19–31 – The Victory of the Suffering Messiah

Overview

The closing portion of Psalm 22 moves from desperate prayer to triumphant praise. David expresses confidence that God will answer his cries and deliver him. The psalm expands beyond David’s experience to portray the worldwide reign of the coming Messiah. All nations, generations, and peoples will worship the Lord because of His saving work.
