The Greater Love

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13 ESV)

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 ESV). When we read in Romans 3:10 – 12 ESV: 10 “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”, one has to wonder how any can come to believe.

The answer is found in Ephesians 2:4 – 5 ESV: 4 ”But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” While we were spiritually dead and hated God, he made us alive so we could believe, but who did he make alive?

That question is answered in John 15:16 ESV: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” It is God’s sovereign choice who he will adopt into his family, but the Scriptures are clear that no one who seeks will be denied (however, look and think about Romans 3:10).

The Father loved the world so much that he was willing to sacrifice his Son to meet our need of salvation. Jesus then was willing, because of his love for those who would believe, to die in our place taking upon himself our sin and exchange clothing us with his righteousness. Then at salvation the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us and as a result God’s sacrificial love now exist within and we have the ability to love others sacrificially. God’s love that dwells within us is the greatest love, and that love enables us to love someone to the point of our death. Jesus expressed his love for us by dying for us to provide us with salvation. Are we willing to possibly die in sharing the gospel that others might find salvation? Are you willing to lay down your life for the salvation of others if necessary? There is a multitude through the world that are doing that today.

The Greatest Love Is Sacrificial Love

Summary Paragraph

John 15:13 reveals the highest expression of love ever demonstrated. Jesus declares, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (ESV). These words were spoken on the night before His crucifixion, making them both a teaching and a prophecy of what He Himself would accomplish on the cross. While human love often seeks comfort, security, or personal benefit, Christ’s love willingly embraces sacrifice for the good of others. His death was not merely an act of friendship but the atoning sacrifice for sinners, revealing God’s immeasurable grace and mercy. This verse also establishes the pattern for every disciple. Believers are called to love others with a selfless, servant-hearted love that places another’s needs above personal desires. Though few are called to die physically for another, every Christian is called to live sacrificially by serving, forgiving, encouraging, and giving generously. Jesus’ love is both the foundation of our salvation and the model for our daily relationships.

Discussion Questions with Extended Answers:

1. What makes Jesus’ love the greatest example of love?

Answer:

Jesus’ love is the greatest because it is completely selfless and sacrificial. He willingly laid down His life, not because He deserved death, but because humanity deserved judgment. His sacrifice was voluntary, motivated by perfect obedience to the Father and perfect love for sinners. Unlike human love, which is often limited or conditional, Christ loved even those who rejected Him. His death satisfied God’s justice while providing forgiveness and eternal life for all who believe. No greater act of love has ever been demonstrated than the Creator willingly dying to redeem His creation.

2. Who are the “friends” Jesus refers to in this verse?

Answer:

In the immediate context, Jesus is speaking to His disciples, whom He soon calls His friends because they know the Father’s will (John 15:15). However, His sacrificial death extends far beyond the eleven disciples gathered with Him. Through faith, all believers become His friends and members of God’s family. Remarkably, Romans 5:8 reminds us that Christ died for us while we were still sinners, showing that His love reached us even before we responded to Him. His sacrifice transforms enemies of God into beloved friends through grace.

3. How should Christians imitate the sacrificial love of Jesus?

Answer:

Most believers will never be asked to die physically for another person, but every believer is called to die daily to selfishness. Sacrificial love is expressed through serving others, forgiving offenses, bearing one another’s burdens, giving generously, speaking truth with kindness, and placing the needs of others before personal comfort. Parents sacrifice for children, spouses for one another, church members for fellow believers, and Christians for those in need. Living like Christ means asking not, “What can others do for me?” but rather, “How can I serve them?” This kind of love reflects the character of Jesus to the world.

4. How does the cross define our understanding of true love?

Answer:

The cross demonstrates that true love is measured by giving rather than receiving. Modern culture often defines love primarily by feelings or personal fulfillment, but Jesus defines love through sacrifice and commitment. At Calvary, God’s justice and mercy met perfectly. Christ bore the penalty of sin so that sinners could receive forgiveness and eternal life. Because of the cross, believers understand that genuine love is willing to endure hardship, forgive deeply, remain faithful, and seek another person’s highest good even at great personal cost.

5. What encouragement does this verse provide during times of suffering or loneliness?

Answer:

John 15:13 assures believers that they are deeply loved by the One who gave everything for them. When circumstances suggest abandonment or hardship, the cross stands as permanent evidence that Christ’s love never changes. His sacrifice proves our worth in God’s eyes—not because of our merit, but because of His grace. This assurance enables believers to face trials with confidence, knowing that the Savior who gave His life for them will never forsake them. His sacrificial love provides hope, strength, and the promise of eternal fellowship with Him.

6. Why is sacrificial love such a powerful witness to the world?

Answer:

Sacrificial love reflects the very heart of God. The world is accustomed to self-interest, competition, and conditional relationships, but Christlike love stands in sharp contrast. When believers forgive those who hurt them, serve without seeking recognition, give generously, and remain faithful through hardship, they display the transforming power of the gospel. Jesus taught that the world would recognize His disciples by their love for one another (John 13:35). Every act of selfless love points beyond the believer to Christ, whose death on the cross remains the greatest demonstration of love the world has ever known.
